Lent is a 40-day period of prayer and fasting celebrated by most Christians, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday each year. This year, Lent begins on Feb. 14 and ends on Mar. 28.

During this time, many Catholics will refrain from eating meat, except for fish and seafood, on Fridays. Naturally, several fish fries are taking place throughout Lent in metro Detroit. Here are the details on some of those events.

Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church

Every Friday during Lent, Sweetest Heart of Mary will be offering breaded fish, grilled shrimp, lemon-baked cod, beer-battered cod, and more. Water F. Bruce VFW Post #1146

From 4-8 p.m. every Friday during Lent, the VFW Bruce Post is offering cod, perch, shrimp, and more. This is a cash-only event, and all proceeds go toward supporting veterans in need. St. Francis D’Assisi St. Hedwig Parish

St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church

St. Isaac Jogues

St. Isaac Jogues Men’s Club is hosting their annual fish fry each Friday during Lent, except for Good Friday, from 4:30-8 p.m. The menu includes beer-battered cod, shrimp, pizza, pierogies and more. St. Jane Frances de Chantal

This Lenten fish fry dinner will benefit the ministries of St. Jane Frances each Friday during Lent from 4-7 p.m. Dinner options include two or three pieces of cod with fries, mac n’ cheese, coleslaw, and more. St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit

The 175-year-old organization hosts its annual fish fries on Feb. 16 and 23, and March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Dinner is a traditional fish & chips dish and includes sit-down table service, a cash bar, bagpiping, and Highland dancers. Two-piece fish dinners start at $13. St. Malachy Catholic Church

The St. Malachy Men’s Club is hosting their annual fish fry from 4-7 p.m. each Friday during Lent. Dinner options include fried or baked cod, butterfly shrimp, potato pierogies, fish sandwiches, and more. There will be a 50/50 drawing each Friday for a free fish dinner! Our Lady of Good Counsel

From 5:30-7:30 p.m. each Friday during Lent, Our Lady of Good Counsel is offering baked or fried fish, shrimp, salads, baked potatoes, and a dessert menu.
