“Wazzup!” The Pistons have teamed up with legendary comedian and actor Martin Lawrence on a new limited-edition merchandise line available today at the fitting time of 3:13 p.m. The Martin x Pistons collection pays homage to the iconic ’90s sitcom that was set right here in Detroit and helped pave the way for Black television. Fans can purchase items at pistons313shop.com.
The drop will include jerseys, T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, and hats featuring the famed Martin intro text; images of Lawrence’s many characters on the show; and well-known quotes like “Wazzup, wazzup, wazzup,” and “Original playa from the Himalayas,” along with the Pistons logo.
According to a press release, Lawrence was thrilled with the idea of a partnership and expressed his support for both the line and the city. “Detroit has always shown me so much love and always shows up for me,” he says. “From standup tours to fans on the street, Detroit has felt like home. It’s an honor to be part of something that means so much to me this many years later.”
The collaboration between Lawrence and the Pistons comes after a few recent partnerships and rebranding efforts for our resident NBA team. Last November, the Pistons unveiled its new e-commerce store featuring the franchise’s new DETail Threads lifestyle collection. And in December, Big Sean became the team’s first-ever creative director of innovation.
“With the city of Detroit as the show’s backdrop, Martin became must-watch TV in the ’90s,” says Mike Zavodsky, the Pistons’ chief business officer, in a press release. “Martin’s love for the Pistons in the show translated into passion for the team — the fact that he has a ring from the 2004 team is proof of that. We’re thrilled to partner with Martin to introduce a merchandise line that pays homage to both Martin and the show’s Detroit roots.”
