If you’re struggling with dry skin this winter, there may be something you’re doing (or not doing) that’s to blame. When taking a shower or bath, some soaps will strip skin of healthy oils that our body naturally produces. “When you remove too much of that oil, your skin gets dry,” says Dr. Darius Mehregan, department chair of dermatology at Wayne State University. Dr. Mehregan recommends bathing just once per day to avoid zapping these oils that keep your skin smooth.

Properly moisturizing after you bathe is also key to keeping your skin hydrated, he explains. “Immediately after you pat yourself dry, you want to put the moisturizer on because your skin is already still wet from the shower, and you want to seal that moisture in with a layer of oil,” says Dr. Mehregan

When it comes to choosing the right moisturizer, there are several options enriched with a variety of oils. “For the most part, it doesn’t really matter what kind of oil, but you do have to be a little bit conscious about some of the exotic oils and whether you could be allergic to them,” warns Dr. Mehregan, especially those with nut allergies.

With Dr. Mehregan’s recommendations in mind, check out these local, all-natural products packed with rich oils that will keep your skin smooth despite winter’s frigid temps.
