Hoping to support local business while shopping for mom this Mother’s Day? Consider swinging by Jytte Designs’ first pop-up shop on May 2. The Detroit-based sustainable luxury leather brand is selling its goods at Coup D’état, and you can pick up everything from handmade cardholders and keychains to clutches and backpacks.

Detroiter Juna Durrant launched Jytte Designs — named after her grandmother Jytte Ulrich —in December 2020. Durrant first started sewing with leather in 2014 when she made a bag for a friend who was getting married. Since then, she’s taught herself hand-stitching techniques and how to work with leather tools and lacing patterns. When Durrant lost her serving job during the pandemic, she decided to use her savings and stimulus check to finally pursue her dream of starting her own business.

The result is a line of more than 12 leather goods that range from $25 to $850. Popular bags include the June Moon Bag, a circular bag that can be worn cross-body; Lulu Clutch, an oversized clutch that’s accented with tassels; and Aurelia Bag, a bucket-style bag with tassels.

Sustainability is a prime focus for Durrant. To avoid overstock, all her products are made to order and sewn by hand — Durrant says Jytte Designs is the only luxury leather brand in Michigan that does all its stitching with this technique. They’re also made of high-quality materials, like full-grain leather and solid brass hardware, to ensure that they hold up season after season.

“Jytte Designs customers are very socially conscious and aware of doing their part to reduce waste,” says Durrant in a press release. “Our handbags are not only sewn by hand, but they are constructed of only the highest quality materials, intended to last you a lifetime.”

The pop-up shop will be open from noon to 5 p.m. The pop-up will be an exception to Jytte Designs’ made-to-order model, and products will be available for purchase on-site. Coup D’etat is located at 3044 W. Grand Boulevard. in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.

“It’s been a joy to collaborate with new and upcoming talent like Juna,” says Angela Wisniewski, owner of Coup D’état, in a press release. “Her designs and careful craftsmanship come together to offer moms the ultimate gift that is beautiful, unique, and supports our Detroit design community.”
