Your roommate’s boyfriend living rent-free in your apartment is one thing. That same boyfriend stealing your rent money the day it’s due to create a t-shirt line is — surprisingly hilarious.
One of Them Days, directed by Detroit-native Lawrence Lamont, is set to release in theaters on Jan. 17, 2025. The story follows Dreux and Alyssa, played by Keke Palmer and SZA, respectively, as they attempt to make $1,500 in just a few hours to pay their rent and avoid eviction. The culprit behind their woes? Alyssa’s freeloading boyfriend Keshawn, played by Joshua David Neal, who uses their rent money to launch a t-shirt line designed with a “Cucci” logo.
The star-studded cast features other familiar faces, including comedian Katt Williams, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and others.
Written by Syreeta Singleton, Lamont, who moved from Detroit to Los Angeles in 2013, was attracted to directing this film because of the connection he felt to the script.
“The way she [Singleton] writes Black women in general is just so unique, and it doesn’t feel like you’re reading a script,” Lamont says. “… I just instantly fell in love with it, and I saw my cousin, I saw my mom — I saw so many characters in the script that I know in real life.”
One of Them Days is Lamont’s first time directing a movie. The film was shot in about 22 days last July, and Lamont says his experience directing television shows, like Rap Sh!t, and music videos, like Big Sean’s I Don’t F*** with You, prepared him for the fast-paced environment.
“I had to trust my intuition and make things happen in two, three, four takes, so there was that added pressure, but I think we were able to catch lightning in a bottle,” Lamont says, adding that, funny enough, their hectic schedule mirrored the film’s story of having to race against the clock.
Lamont, who was first introduced to putting productions together in drama class at Southfield High School, says the film will remind people “why we all love going to the movies.”
“I think the world needs laughter right now with all the craziness going on, and our film is a breath of fresh air with some crazy hijinks,” Lamont says.
