Little Ghost Plans Early Summer Opening in Ferndale
When we included this upcoming eatery on our 2025 Restaurants on Our Radar list, it didn’t even have a name yet. But the idea was enough to make our mouths water — a fast casual spot serving up the perfect sandwich: Grey Ghost’s juicy double patty on a sesame seed bun with melted American cheese, caramelized onions, and secret sauce. And earlier this month, the name dropped: Little Ghost (which made us think of a certain White Stripes song).
Hospitality group Four Man Ladder, the team who’s also behind Second Best and Basan, says they’re aiming to open Little Ghost early this summer at 22305 Woodward Avenue in Ferndale — and they see this as “the first of additional locations.” Besides burgers, Little Ghost will feature chicken sandwiches and other signature sides. It will primarily target takeout customers, offering daily hours, local delivery, and even catering services.

Rose’s Fine Food is Making a Detroit Comeback
When we checked in last month, we were doing a bit of speculating about Rose’s Fine Food, the beloved diner on Detroit’s east side that shuttered in 2023. And sure enough, on April 2, owner Molly Mitchell took to social media, announcing the acclaimed eatery, known for comforting classic American fare made with locally sourced ingredients, is planning to reopen in late May.
In the meantime, she’s collaborating with local chocolatier Bon Bon Bon on their diner-inspired spring collection, featuring limited-time bon flavors like Double R Cherry Pie, Buckwheat Pancake, and Shirley’s Potato Donut. The collection is an exclusive pre-sale item which can be ordered with a bag of her signature pancake mix. For more information, visit bonbonbon.com.
Bev’s Bagels to open in former Detroit Institute of Bagels Space
The space once occupied by the Detroit Institute of Bagels in Detroit’s Core City district is getting a brand-new bagel spot.
Bev’s Bagels is helmed by Max Sussman, a Huntington Woods native who made his name in New York’s dining scene and in 2012 became a semifinalist for James Beard’s Rising Star Chef of the Year award.
Named after Sussman’s grandmother and inspired by the Jewish bagel tradition, Bev’s plans to serve organic sourdough bagels and bagel sandwiches, with a careful eye for ethically sourced and local ingredients — plus seasonal offerings and drip coffee.
“An incredible bagel has to start with incredible ingredients and ours will have organic flour, some whole grains, and use a sourdough starter,” Sussman said in a press release. “I’m pretty obsessive over the details, so the sandwiches will all have these amazing components, from creative schmears to wild smoked fish to ethically sourced meats.”
The bakery plans to debut in late spring at 4884 Grand River, Unit 1B, neighboring Lady of the House, Barda, Puma, and Vesper Books & Wine.

Slow’s Bar BQ Plots Berkley Location

Slows Bar BQ announced it is expanding to downtown Berkley. The announcement comes just shy of the barbecue joint’s 20-year anniversary. The new suburban spot will be located at the corner of 12 Mile and Griffith. The space up until recently housed Berkley Common, which shuttered permanently earlier this month.
The new Slows spot plans to open later this year and is said to feature full-service dining on the first floor and a second-floor space for private events, as well as an outdoor patio and parklet along Griffith. An annual Best of Detroit winner since 2006, Slows Bar BQ first opened its flagship Corktown location across the street from then-empty Michigan Central in 2005. This isn’t its first expansion venture: there is a Slows to Go currently operating in Midtown, and the restaurant has previously opened locations in Pontiac and Grand Rapids — although neither stayed afloat.
Traverse City Restaurant is Michigan’s Only James Beard Award Nominee
Cooks House, a farm-to-fork restaurant in Traverse City known for its constantly rotating menu, extensive wine program, and on-site cooking classes, was the only Michigan restaurant to receive James Beard nominee status for 2025, announced April 2. Chef-owners Jennifer Blakeslee and Eric Patterson snagged the honor for the Best Chef: Great Lakes category, the restaurant’s first since opening in 2008. The awards ceremony, dubbed the “Oscars of Food” takes place June 16 at Lyric Opera of Chicago.
