Hot and Fresh: Some of the Latest Metro Detroit Restaurant Openings
Bev’s Bagels, Detroit
Among the most recent metro Detroit restaurant openings, Bev’s Bagels is now open daily in Detroit’s Core City, following a soft launch phase that already resulted in several early sell-outs and even praise from a senatorial candidate. The organic sourdough bagel shop from Huntington Woods native Max Sussman (of James Beard fame) features 10 bagel varieties, including unique doughy rounds like pumpernickel everything, za’atar, and spicy furikake. Located in part of the former Detroit Institute of Bagels space at 4884 Grand River, Unit 1B, Detroit, its hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or, until they sell out).
La Jali, Taylor
La Jalisciense, a combination restaurant-bar-market, has been a popular destination in Mexicantown for over a decade. Now, they’ve expanded Downriver with a second location called La Jali, which offers many of the same favorites served in a “streamlined cafeteria format.” Diners can expect birria, chilaquiles, tortas, bistek, cecina — plus a self-serve station featuring staples to snack on like chicharrones. There’s also no shortage of adult beverages — margaritas, micheladas, spiked horchata, and more. La Jali is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 9411 Telegraph Rd. in Taylor.

Bon Bon Bon, Birmingham
Bon Bon Bon — the Hamtramck-headquartered chocolatier known for its unique and ultra-giftable bons has opened a new location right next door to the Birmingham 8 movie theatre at 217 S Old Woodward Ave. Its hours are Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Eureka Eatery, Dearborn
Michigan fast-food eatery known for halal hot chicken sandwiches and shakes had the grand opening for its Dearborn location on May 17. The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. at 22805 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. The restaurant has two other locations: one in Garden City, and one in Monroe.
Sweetgreen, Village of Rochester Hills
The fast-casual chain known for its veggie-forward salads and bowls is opening its fifth location in Rochester Hills. The new location will feature Sweetgreen’s limited KBBQ menu in collaboration with the New York-based Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse COTE. Offerings from that menu include KBBQ-glazed steak bowls and plates, as well as a cucumber kimchi crunch salad. After two soft opening day events on May 21 and 22, its grand opening will take place on Friday, May 23. For every meal purchased on opening day, Sweetgreen will donate a meal to local charity Forgotten Harvest. Located at 260 N Adams Road, Sweetgreen will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Fourth Street Restaurant, Royal Oak
This new restaurant offers brunch, and after 3 p.m. transforms into a bistro with burgers, sandwiches, and salads had its grand opening on May 14 at 500 E 4th Street in Royal Oak. If the address sounds familiar, that’s because it’s located in the space once occupied by the beloved Inn Season Café, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant that closed in 2023 after more than 40 years of business. The new concept comes from Sokol Ndrejaj, who runs the business with his wife and children, and used to run the now-closed Col’s Place in Madison Heights (his brother, Bekim runs the Col’s Place on west 14 Mile Road in Royal Oak). “We upped the game,” Sokol tells Hour Detroit. “We use some of the freshest best ingredients! It’s a family affair.” Fourth Street Restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m.-10 p.m.

Jinya Ramen Bar, Royal Oak
On April 28, the first Michigan location for a ramen chain that originated in Los Angeles opened in downtown Royal Oak. Jinya Ramen Bar serves up ramen with slow-simmered broths and toppings like tender pork chashu, shrimp wonton, and seasoned eggs; and other offerings include rice bowls, craft beers, and cocktails. Located at 129 S Main Street, its hours are Sunday – Wednesday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday – Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Pocket Change, Detroit
Another Detroit restaurant opening to be aware of is this cocktail bar inspired by New York nightlife with a rooftop patio opened in Eastern Market last month. Pocket Change is the concept of Nelson Kazan, the former bar manager at SheWolf Pastificio & Bar. Located at 1454 Gratiot Ave., it’s open 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Thursdays, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
