Annabel Cohen

Annabel Cohen is a caterer and food and lifestyle writer. She has catered picnics for herself and clients around the world, from yachts and penthouses to parks and forests. You can almost taste the examples of her stylings in this month’s outdoor entertaining feature, “Life’s a Picnic.” For Cohen, the only difference between picnics and other parties is venue. Whether she serves it in disposables on the lawn or with crystal and porcelain, she never “dumbs down” a meal on the go. Ever.

Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis spends his days working as a communications officer at the New Economy Initiative, a Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan program that’s building a regional network of support for entrepreneurs. While researching our riverfront real estate story he was pleasantly surprised to find that you can rent an apartment with a river view for significantly less than some not-so-great Midtown units (though he suspects that could change soon). Lewis’ freelance work has appeared in Model D, Detroit Free Press, MLive, and Next City.

Monica Mercer

Monica Mercer is a freelance journalist and a former associate editor for Hour Detroit magazine. She specializes in medical reporting and has written on many diverse topics including the little-known Charles Bonnet syndrome, ovarian cancer, and organ donation. For this month’s story on the HIV crisis in Detroit, Mercer was struck by how stigmatized the virus still is. “There’s a functional cure for HIV,” Mercer says. “People are living — and thriving — with it. It’s tragic that there is still so much fear and shame.”

Arthur E. Giron

Arthur E. Giron is a California-based artist/illustrator with 16 years of experience working with a variety of newspapers, magazines, and book publishers. Ironically Giron is colorblind but manages a limited palette to complement his unique style and conceptual illustrations. See his work for this month’s story on HIV. In his down time, Giron enjoys spending time with his three daughters, mountain biking, and playing drums. His clients include Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Smithsonian, Time, and Mother Jones.
