Leslie Ellis

Leslie Ellis launched Ellis Collective: Creative Services for the Greater Good with her husband, photographer Darrel Ellis, after the pair left their journalism careers in 2013. Leslie Ellis previously worked at The Detroit News, Patch.com, and The Oakland Press. She now spends her free time writing about community, culture, and our shared humanity, including our article about implicit racial bias and how it affects health care for patients of color. “People can’t solve a problem if they don’t understand it,” she says. “That’s why it was important to me to raise awareness about implicit bias in health care. Hopefully this story will provoke introspection and improve patients’ experiences.”

Roy Ritchie

Roy Ritchie is a commercial and editorial photographer who is always ready to go adventuring to another location shoot. Clients include Ford, Chrysler, GM, ESPN, Car and Driver, Fortune, and Bon Appétit. Check out his work in the implicit bias and air pollution stories in this year’s Top Docs section. For his next assignment, he says, “I hope to some day photograph a camel swimming, but until then I’m going to try eating all the flavors of apples.”

Scott Atkinson

Scott Atkinson has been reporting on Flint for more than a decade, and most recently has written about the city’s water crisis for The New York Times and other publications. “I was so glad for the opportunity to interview Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha,” Atkinson says of his story in this issue of Hour Detroit. “As so much attention has left Flint, Dr. Mona wanted to talk about the thing I was most eager to ask: What do we do now?” Atkinson is also the editor of the recently published Happy Anyway: A Flint Anthology from Belt Publishing.

Jesse David Green

Jesse David Green is a photographer based in Detroit’s New Center. Clients have included Stearns & Foster, Shinola, and Bon Appétit magazine for a variety of projects focusing on Detroit and its maker movement. This month he photographed the story on Puppet Art Theater. “Photographing the Puppet Art Theater for Hour was a really fun step away from the norm for me. To be able to walk into a place so out of the ordinary, to watch people perform an art form so specific to their passions is a really inspiring thing,” he says. “Igor and his team have built something truly amazing and unique to the city, and the passion and vigor at which they have continued to chase these dreams for years is something to aspire to, especially as an artist.”
