Honors for ‘Hour’

Hour Detroit magazine picked up six awards at the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual Excellence in Journalism program and banquet in April.

Freelance writer Richard Bak won first place in Features Reporting for his local take on
the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking (“A Night That’s Still Remembered”). Bak also scored first in Sports Reporting for his story on pitcher Eddie Cicotte (“Foul Ball”). Associate Editor Mark Kurlyandchik placed second in General News Reporting for his article on the firearm-detecting system ShotSpotter (“Big Bang Theory”), and Managing Editor George Bulanda also won second place in Criticism. Art Director Cassidy Zobl nabbed first place in Spread Design for the Best of Detroit section and second place for Cover Design in the same June 2011 issue.
