For the past several years, our annual food issue has been a labor of love, in particular for Dorothy Hernandez, our former managing editor. During her time at Hour Detroit, she has been an invaluable part of our editorial team, and not just when it came to all things edible.
Aside from food topics, including the conception and execution of our “Shared Plates” recipe contest, she’s written big stories on tiny houses, kept my grammar errors in check, and more — winning numerous awards from our local Society of Professional Journalists, including a few first-place kudos for headline writing (my personal favorite: “B-I-N-G … OMG!” about drag queen bingo night in Royal Oak).
We’re going to miss her professionally and personally. We wish Dorothy success in her new role working for the City of Detroit’s “neighborhood storytelling” group (something we learned more out about when we spent “An Hour With …” Dorothy’s new co-worker, Aaron Foley, in our July 2017 issue).
While Dorothy may now be crafting Detroit neighborhood stories, she still has some tales to tell readers of Hour Detroit. See her piece on a Cantonese dumplings and a hot pot feast in Eastern Market. And she can cook, too! Keep an eye out for her Filipino-inspired pop-up restaurant concept Sarap, which she co-founded with her partner in 2014.
The rest of our issue explores Detroit’s international food and drink connections. There’s a trip to Spain with a local wine importer, a community gardening network run by Bangladeshi women, a baker who learned French pastry in Shanghai and an outsider’s perspective on some largely unheralded Detroit eateries from a nationally known food blogger who goes by The Hungry Black Man.
