I follow baseball old-school style — on the radio, generally catching portions of way more than 100 Detroit Tigers games each year.
Maybe it’s classic early-season optimism, but their veterans and young guns mix could make for an interesting year: arms like last year’s AL Rookie of the Year, Michael Fulmer, and perennial Cy Young contender Justin Verlander; consistent sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez followed by young maybes like JaCoby Jones and Tyler Collins.
This year’s “Best of Detroit” crop is a similar mix of veterans and first-timers. We have repeats (and three-peats): Miller’s Bar and Redcoat Tavern are burger kings; Vivio’s bloody mary rules; Rochelle Riley still writes circles around most of us. And Otus Supply and Parc could be considered restaurant rookies of the year.
However, there are always surprises. O.W.L. stole the 24-hour restaurant title. Detroit Dog Rescue’s Canines and Couture knocked longtime champ Auto Show Preview Gala off the Charity Event leaderboard. Sometimes, a place we’ve never heard of crops up. So we need to visit Chesley’s, a neighborhood bar in Lincoln Park.
It’s not just new kids on the block. Witness the return of Paul W. as Best Radio Voice. And it took Carmen Harlan’s retirement for someone else (Hello, Rhonda Walker!) to take the Local Female TV anchor spot. (At least we’ll still be able to hear Harlan’s voice on the QLine.)
