November 2008 CoverMath Corps Is No. 1

I was reading the November 2008 issue of Hour Detroit when I found your article about Wayne State University’s Math Corps. I am a former Math Corps participant, and was so excited to see the program getting the recognition it deserves. I now recognize Math Corps as the source of my love for math; I’m currently a junior at the University of Michigan majoring in financial math. The WSU program did so much for me, not only with respect to math, but also in teaching me responsibility and helping me to build my self-confidence. I am forever grateful to Math Corps and Professor [Steve] Kahn for the difference they made in my life, and the change they are bringing to Detroit.

A Dressing Down

Shame on you for your Best-Dressed article (November). It couldn’t have been timed more poorly. Our entire country is in financial turmoil, and Michigan is in dire shape. Metro Detroit is being hit hard, and yet there’s Rhonda Walker, shopping “exclusively” at Neiman Marcus and talking about her “hundreds” of pairs of shoes. Then there’s Geoffrey Fieger and his tailor-made clothes. How nice that the financial crisis hasn’t touched any of the people in your article. Good for them. But the majority of people who see your magazine aren’t in a position to dress or shop that way. There may have been a time when it was fun and entertaining to read how these people live and shop, but not now. To me, an article on well-dressed people who don’t have a lot of money to spend on their wardrobes, and who still have a sense of style and class, would be more appropriate at this time.

Editor’s note: Our staff discussed those concerns and concluded that, even in tough times, we never stop needing fun and fantasy. The popularity of Hollywood glamour during the Great Depression is evidence of that. In all eras, shiny new cars, stately homes, and, yes, beautiful fashions, feed our desire to move forward and achieve. In addition, many, if not all, of our “fashion plates” give generously to this community in time and money, making us happy to showcase them on our pages.

That ’70s Guy

Note to Geoffrey Fieger (November 2008 Best Dressed): The ’70s called; they want their hairstyle back.

All for the Best

The Hour Detroit Best-Dressed cover was one of the coolest things to ever happen to me. I loved it, and the feedback has been so flattering and complimentary! It was a total honor to be selected.
