Detroit Riverwalk, Campus Martius and DIA win USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Detroit Riverwalk was voted the Best Riverwalk for the third year in a row and Campus Martius came in first for Best Public Square. The Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan Science Center, and Motown Museum were also nominated for awards but USA Today hasn’t released the results for those awards yet.

Bedrock announces plans for Cadillac Square development.

The plans include adding residential retail, office, entertainment, and parking space. Construction is set to begin in 2024after the NFL Draft and will be completed in three phases. The second and third phases will begin in 2026 and 2028, respectively.

Olga’s Kitchen teams up with McClure’s Pickles in Detroit for a new sandwich.

The Shrimp Po’Boy sandwich features McClure’s sweet and spicy pickles, amongst other ingredients. The sandwich is now available at Olga’s.

Detroit breaks ground on two affordable housing developments.

MHT Housing Inc.’s Brush Park Apartments will feature 53 residential units and nearly 3,800 square feet of commercial space. The company’s MLK on 2nd apartments will feature 33 residential units as well as retail space on the ground floor.

Great American Cookies opens its first Michigan outlet.

The business, which calls itself the “Original Cookie Cake franchise,” has opened a location at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi. In addition to cookie cake, folks can expect brownies, gourmet cookies, and more.

A Berkley pet shop has been ordered to halt dog sales amid abuse claims.

City officials have launched an investigation into Puppygram, which recently opened. Officials are expected to draft new ordinances to better regulate pet stores at the next city council meeting, after residents complained and protested this week.

Lake Superior State University creates its first scholarship for LGBTQ students.

Students who conduct studies and research related to LGBTQ issues and show a commitment to supporting the progress of LGBTQ civil rights movements are eligible for the scholarship.

Miguel Cabrera begins his final spring training.

Cabrera — who we named one of our 2023 Hour Detroiters — began training with the Tigers yesterday in Lakeland, Florida. He told reporters he doesn’t know “what my role is going to be this year, but I’m open to everything. Hopefully, if I can hit, I’m going to be in the lineup.”

Detroit eatery Bunny Bunny reopened over the weekend.

Owners Justin Tootla and Jen Jackson, who closed their fusion restaurant in Eastern Market last September, are giving it another try. Bunny Bunny is currently open for in-person dining and carry-out.

Gourmet popsicle chain Popbar is expanding to metro Detroit.

The New York-based chain will break ground on a Detroit location sometime this year, followed by other locations in metro Detroit. Popbar is known for serving gelato, sorbet, and frozen yogurt on a stick. Its menu features more than 80 rotating and customizable flavors.

A record number of guns were seized at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 2022.

TSA officers seized 100 handguns last year, which is more than twice the number in 2019. This data reflects an alarming national trend; the number of guns seized nationwide has increased every year since 2008, with the exception of 2021.

Ori’Zaba’s Scratch Mexican Grill is coming to metro Detroit.

The fast-casual Mexican restaurant franchise will open locations in Oakland and Macomb counties later this year. Folks can expect customizable burritos, bowls, nachos, tacos, quesadillas, and salad.

James Harden reaches out to a student wounded in Michigan State University shooting.

The basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers had a FaceTime call with John Hao, who was paralyzed from the attack. Hao received a pair of game-worn sneakers and other gifts from the athlete. Elsewhere, a PBS producer and Clawson resident made a tribute video for Alexandria Verner, a MSU Student and 2020 Clawson graduate who was one of the three students killed.
