HopCat to open new location in Livonia this summer
The popular Grand Rapids-based beer bar and restaurant chain, focusing on Michigan beer, will open its fourth metro Detroit venue in the former location of Claddagh Irish Pub on Haggerty. The new HopCat will feature a wrap-around bar, two outdoor patios, arcade games, an event space, and room to hold 315 guests. Their other metro Detroit locations are in Detroit, Royal Oak, and Ann Arbor.
The Detroit News and Detroit City Distillery pair up on bourbon for the News’ 150th anniversary
The 100-proof, single barrel bourbon whiskey comes in a clear glass bottle with a special label that features The Detroit News’ front page from when the 21st Amendment, which outlawed alcohol consumption, fell. The duo only made 250 bottles. It goes on sale at 8 a.m. on June 9.
DIA hosts James Barnor exhibition you can’t see anywhere else (yet)
The Detroit Institute of Arts is the first place in America to show an exhibition from a highly influential Ghanaian photographer. James Barnor: Accra/London—A Retrospective features over 170 photos Barnor took from the ‘50s to the ‘80s. It’s on display through Oct. 15.
Two Michigan bills aim to prevent doctors from providing puberty blockers or surgery for transgender minors
House bills 4539 and 4540 would make it a felony punishable by up to four years in prison for doctors to provide minors with puberty blockers or “genital gender reassignment surgery,” which includes penectomy, vaginoplasty, clitoroplasty, hysterectomy, and phalloplasty. The only sponsor of the bills is Rep. Brad Paquette, R-Niles.
Fires in northern Michigan put state at ‘very high’ or ‘extreme’ fire danger levels
Thanks to a continuing dry spell and more than three dozen fires Up North, much of the state is “highly susceptible to wildfires.” Michiganders are encouraged to only burn cooking fires “no taller than a few feet high” after 6 p.m. and to keep water and other tools to extinguish fires on hand.
Debt ceiling deal includes resumption of student loan payments
In order to raise the debt ceiling, President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy came to an agreement that terminates the pause on student loan payments and interest — a move applauded by the GOP. The deal does not affect Biden’s student loan cancellation plan that would provide up to $20,000 in loan forgiveness and protects the ability to pause payments again in future emergencies. Payments could resume as early as this fall.
Popular food truck will open second location in Oakland County
According to a social media post, Detroit 75 Kitchen is planning to open its new spot in the former Sears Auto Center on 14 Mile Road in Troy sometime in July. Co-owner and chef Mike Nassar says the location will be full-service with a menu filled with sandwiches like the 3rd Street Cheesesteak.
Dearborn’s Paradise Biryani Pointe launches new food truck
The new truck, Paradise Street Eats, celebrated its grand opening in Greektown just before Memorial Day and offers a menu of Indian fusion street snacks like butter chicken tacos, chicken tikka kati rolls in paratha bread, za-atar cheese dosa, and more. Find it parked at 1200 Randolph during the week and on Belle Isle on the weekends.
Detroit Pistons to hire new head coach on a six-year contract
After nearly two months of searching for a new head coach, the Pistons have reached a six-year, $78.5 million deal with Monty Williams, the former coach for the Phoenix Suns who also played for the University of Notre Dame where he was an honorable mention All-American before being drafted in the first round by the New York Nicks in 1994. He played for the NBA for nine years. The deal, which will make Williams one of the highest-paid coaches in the NBA, also offers team options for a seventh and eighth year and incentives that could increase the amount to $100 million.
Mayor Duggan announces plan to reduce property taxes
The “A Land Value Tax Plan,” which was announced at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Wednesday, shifts the property tax burden from homeowners to owners of vacant land in the city by lowering taxes for homeowners by 30 percent and raising taxes on owners of vacant land.
A new waffle café opened on the Avenue of Fashion
Waffle Café Detroit made its debut at 18685 Livernois on May 31. The menu at the new café includes 45 varieties of “decked-out waffles” in unique flavors like chicken bacon ranch, loaded potato, candied caramel pecan, and berry smothered. Plus, waffle burritos, tea, coffee, and ice cream.
Gov. Whitmer names new Chief Growth Officer to fight Michigan’s population stagnation
Hillary Doe fills the brand-new role and will work closely with the new “Growing Michigan Together Council” to “develop long-term funding” for infrastructure and education, and hopefully attract new residents to the state while retaining current ones. She is the first person to fill such a role in the U.S.
