Wayne State University appoints first woman president
The Detroit university’s board of governors unanimously elected Kimberly Andrews Espy to be Wayne State’s 13th president. Espy, who currently serves as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs with the University of Texas at San Antonio, is the first woman to hold the position and will officially take over the role on Aug. 1.
El Niño has officially begun
The “natural climate phenomenon” is marked by warmer water temperatures along the equator of the Pacific Ocean and causes hotter weather around the world, which “exacerbates the effects of climate change.” The last time Michigan had an El Niño season was in 2016 when we had a record warm year. This means it’s likely for our state to see above average temperatures.
European-style café to open in Detroit
Café Sous Terre is expected to open in the basement of a 19th-century Midtown mansion later this month. Guests can expect a drink menu that includes espresso, lattes, tea, and sparkling water alongside French wine, cocktails and mocktails served in the evening. It will also offer small bites including quiches and tarts as well as bagels, salads, and soups.
Greektown receives $20M redevelopment grant
Michigan legislature awarded the money to help the community completely redesign Monroe Street, which runs through the entertainment district. The redesign will turn Monroe Street into a “pedestrian-first walkable street” by leveling the road and eliminating curbs. It will also see the addition of new bollards, trees, planters, and street furniture. The budget is awaiting Gov. Whitmer’s approval.
Tarik Skubal makes his debut after injury
The Tigers’ pitcher returned to the mound on the Fourth of July after flexor tendon surgery for his first start in 337 days. He threw four scoreless innings and only allowed one hit, but the Tigers ultimately lost 1-0 to the Oakland A’s in 10 innings.
USA Today Wine + Food Experience to return to Detroit
The culinary tour, which hasn’t been to the Motor City since 2019, will celebrate area restaurants and their cuisine with a stop on Belle Ilse on Aug. 12. The event will feature sampling dishes by some of the best chefs in metro Detroit and showcase wine, beer, and spirits from local mixologists. General admission is $50 in advance or $65 the day of.
Kris Draper promoted to Red Wings’ assistant GM
The new title comes with additional involvement on the business side of the hockey team including contracts and input on player transactions — he will also continue his current role as director of amateur scouting. Draper, who “was the center of the Red Wings’ heralded Grind Line in the 1990s and early 2000s,” retired in 2011 after 17 seasons with the team and has been working in a front office capacity since.
Detroit Tigers and Upper Deck Golf team up on golf event at Comerica Park
The one-of-a-kind event, which will happen over three days after the Tigers’ last home game of the season this fall, will give golfers and baseball fans the opportunity to play a round of golf inside the park. Participants can choose from two packages that include standard tee time, 18 complimentary golf balls, access to the stadium and clubhouse bar with golfing challenges.
