Absence of Proof brings alcohol-free events to Detroit

The non-alcoholic event curation company from New York City, hosted their first Detroit-based party on April 29 at The Congregation. The pop-up experience created a trendy party setting, with live music, dancing, and mingling, sans alcohol — and more of these events are expected to crop up around the Motor City.

Aretha Franklin’s childhood home is up for sale

The 6,000-square-foot home is in Detroit’s La Salle Gardens neighborhood and is listed at $379,900. It is a brick colonial built in 1916 and features six bedrooms, three full and two half bathrooms, and a detached four-car garage. 

Michigan gas prices drop for third week in a row

Gas prices have fallen by 11 cents since the first week of May and now sit at a cool $3.38 a gallon for regular unleaded. That’s 23 cents less than this time last month and 94 cents down from this time last year. Experts suspect prices will continue to fall unless demand picks up.

Michigan Senate approves new hands-free safe-driving legislation

House bills 4250, 4251, and 4252 seek to amend the Michigan Vehicle Code and modernize existing hands-free laws to match today’s technology and better specify what type of mobile device use is prohibited while driving. The bills were passed by the Senate on May 11, it returned to the House for approval on the same day and passed. It now goes to Gov. Whitmer, and if she signs them, as she says she’s planning to do, the new rules — which would include bans on sending or receiving a telephone call, transmitting a video, using social media, and more — could go into effect as early as June 30.

Easterseals MORC expands reach with new locations in Troy and Wixom

These new locations, and a $45,000 grant, are expected to enhance the organization’s occupational therapy, peer support groups, speech therapy, and other services to better serve individuals and families with autism spectrum disorders in metro Detroit. 

Birmingham’s train station site to be converted into new restaurant

Pending municipal approval, the space that housed Big Rock Chop House will reopen as Big Rock Italian Chop House. The restaurant will feature indoor and outdoor dining, a pergola, an outdoor fireplace, new landscaping, and a banquet facility inside of the space, which once operated as a train station. The new owners, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants in Columbus, Ohio, also operate Ocean Prime in Troy.

The American Society of Civil Engineers says Michigan’s infrastructure needs work

The highest ranking Michigan’s roads, dams, public parks, rail systems, and other infrastructure received was a C+ — putting it just above mediocre. The good (or maybe bad), news is that we’re roughly in line with the national average.

The last group of graduates has left a century-old Michigan college

The Upper Peninsula’s Finlandia University saw around 100 graduates walk the stage as part of the college’s last commencement. Finlandia was founded in 1896 as Suomi College. It announced the closure back in March citing debt, low enrollment, and other challenges.  

Michigan’s State Parks to undergo renovations over the next three years

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is using $250 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to pave new trails, build new bathhouses, and upgrade utilities at various parks. Campers should expect temporary closures, including entire season closures, through 2026.

Detroit to spend $95 million on “ambitious” new infrastructure plan

The plan, which was revealed on May 11, includes repaving 81 miles of road — 41 miles of residential streets and 40 miles of major roads — replacing 70,000 damaged sidewalks segments, and creating new streetscapes in the Dexter, East and West Warren, and the Rosa Parks Blvd. corridors.

Michigan teen and her dog win a title at Westminster Dog Show

Lihi Ruvio (17) and her mom drove from Williamston in Ingham County to New York to enter their 3-year-old cane corso named Sage in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. They won Best of Opposite, meaning she is the best female of the breed. It’s the third Westminster win for Ruvio and Sage.

Michigan House and Senate propose budgets with record spending

Despite economic uncertainty, the Senate has proposed a $79.6 billion budget and the House has asked for $80 billion — well beyond the $79 billion requested by Gov. Whitmer. The budgets include increased funding for the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, free breakfast for public school students, and other initiatives.
