Living Well, Giving Well
Two days after I returned from a weekend in Washington, D.C., the first lady came to Detroit. And just as observations from our capital traveled home with me, I hope she carried a bit of Detroit back to the White House — the beauty of the Detroit Institute of Arts, perhaps, where she lunched after speaking at Wayne State University.
We’ve Got Mail…
Praise us or pan us, but just put it down in words. Bravos or boos, we want to hear from you.

Fallout From the Cold War
Call it a blast from the past. At Wayne State University (WSU), workers recently stumbled across a forgotten stockpile of Cold War-era emergency supplies in the basement of the Schaver Music Recital Hall, a building slated for renovation. Most of the barrels and cardboard boxes, issued by the Department of Civil Defense and squirreled away for decades inside a 3-foot-high crawlspace, are stamped with a date of November 1962.

Creature Comfort
When Jim Walsh held his beloved dog Chrissy for the last time, he had to endure his grief alone. His family was at work on the day when Chrissy — a bichon frisé already in poor health — broke his leg. And the veterinarian, although efficient in administering the lethal drug that euthanized his pet, was not so adept at offering a shoulder to cry on.

Keeping it in the Mix
What’s so special about Mike Posner? The 22-year-old Southfield native recently received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Duke University with a 3.59 GPA. Oh, and in the meantime, he released two buzz-worthy mix-tapes of synthy dance pop, played sold-out college campuses across the country, and inked a major label deal with J Records (Sony/RCA) — all before walking at commencement.
Between shows, which include a set at Bonnaroo and all 43 dates of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, the singer/songwriter/producer is working on his forthcoming debut album. The new grad paused while recording recently at a New York City studio to chat about his music, schoolwork, and “doing it all for The Mitten.” -
Broadcast Blues
It’s called the Sony ELC-MVS01. You’ll never see it, and at least one local television station hopes you won’t notice it in operation. But it could change the way TV news is delivered in Detroit for decades to come.

Links with Success
Golf has a reputation as a rich-man’s sport. And with some courses now charging upwards of $500 to play 18 holes, it’s no wonder that the stereotype persists.

Michigan’s Killer Heat Wave
The heat was on, and so was Suzie. For the ninth time on a broiling hot Sunday in 1936, the headline actress of the Jo Mendi Theatre at the Detroit Zoo gave a crowd of admirers a gracefully vigorous show, roller-skating, pedaling a bicycle, pushing a scooter, walking a tight wire, and performing other tricks […]

2010 Detroiters of the Year
For Al Taubman, it all started in the 1930s with that little blue tin box. Most Jewish families had one of those boxes. They were used for collections for the Jewish homeland in Israel, Taubman says of his boyhood days in Pontiac, “and we collected change. When I went to the store for my mother and came back, she’d say, ‘Put the change in the box.’ And when the box got filled, she gave it to whoever was in charge in those days. They planted trees and bought land in Israel. This was in the ’30s and ’40s, and we didn’t have a lot of money in those days. “That was the first real philanthropy I ever saw.”

-
Fishing Around
The saga of the little fish market called Blue Bay began seven years ago at a garage sale in Grosse Pointe Park. Diane and Darrell Finken were the sellers that day, but as it turned out, they were really the buyers.
Lisa Jackman & Jeffrey Lanctot
Their stylish menus are enticing enough to attract a loyal clientele of discriminating diners, but no matter how expert they are, restaurant people like to take a break from their own kitchens for a taste of someone else’s cooking.

-
Cadieux Café
Steamed mussels were being served here long before they became a staple on menus across town. And they are still the specialty, along with one that can’t be found as easily: feather bowling.
