The Henry Ford’s The Torch Lake dates to 1873 and was built in Massachusetts by Mason Machine Works for the copper-hauling Hecla and Torch Lake Railroad Co.
It was owned by Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. in the Upper Peninsula. The Torch Lake is the only Mason Bogie locomotive to survive. “Bogie” means its driving wheels are able to pivot beneath the boiler, allowing the locomotive to negotiate sharp curves.
