ONE // The new Detroit Mercantile Co. in Eastern Market’s FD Lofts, a 1917 fire-department building, carries a wide array of home goods, furnishings, and gifts in a stylish setting with antique oriental rugs on the floor. For sale are American/Michigan/local products: retro metal signs, handmade jewelry, antiques (including an 1877 Detroit street map), posters, custom local-theme pillows, T-shirts, paper goods, Carhartt gear, and bicycles. TWO // Sisters-in-law Marla Tapper Young and Leora Tapper wanted their new store, Marlee’s by Tapper’s, to be “a space where sisters, mothers, and daughters or best friends will love to come to shop and browse.” Offerings at the accessories boutique include jewelry, handbags, belts, and scarves from Alexis Bittar, John Hardy, Judith Ripka, Movado Bold, Michele Watches, the Michigan-based Marlaina Stone and Lisa Freede, and others. Quartz and vermeil Capri earrings, $60. Twelve Oaks Mall, Novi; 248-380-9900; marleesstyle.com.

THREE // In 2015, the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) will have been on Madison downtown for 100 years, although a clubhouse on Woodward dated to 1888. The DAC as a social mecca didn’t take shape until 1915, when the Albert Kahn-designed building opened. The Enduring Legacy of The Detroit Athletic Club: Driving the Motor City, by Ken Voyles and Mary Rodrique (The History Press, $19.99), is engaging, and the subtitle rings true. When the DAC relocated, members controlled more than 90 percent of the world’s auto production. At bookstores.
