The October skies released torrents of cold rain on the Chic and Unique Vintage Shelby Township Market last year — still thousands of shoppers visited the outdoor event. Rain, shine, or snow (which is not unfathomable for the capricious fall weather in Michigan), the show must go on. Started in 2017 by Southgate husband-and-wife duo Justin and Danyel Green, the market was held in Brownstown, before expanding to also hold annual markets in Shelby Township and Livonia.
“As a kid, I was always fascinated with the story behind items,” Justin says. “I loved going to garage sales and seeing what I could find.” This passion translated into adulthood and — in conjunction with his desire to see small, local businesses succeed — prompted him to start the market.
The event will feature more than 125 independent vendors selling an array of antique and handmade goods. “There’s always a unique mix of vendors, so there is something for everyone. You may have one vendor who makes tables from reclaimed barn wood right next to a vendor who hand-designs gumball machines.”
Along with a multitude of eclectic shopping options, the one-day event will feature food trucks, live music, giveaways, and more. “We love the October market because vendors bring out unique pieces perfect for the upcoming holiday season,” Justin says. “There is nothing more fun than spending the day in your favorite fall clothing, walking around, and looking for treasures.”
