She took a break from her busy design schedule to talk with Hour Detroit about fashion and her 2012 Spring/Summer collection, which ships to Tender in Birmingham in mid-January.
What was the inspiration behind the Spring/Summer 2012 collection?
Yves Saint Laurent, Betty Catroux, and Loulou de la Falaise. It’s a photo of the 1969 Rive Gauche store opening in London. The photo shows a casual, utilitarian version of safari, but there’s also a sophisticated sportswear element that I’m naturally drawn to.
What inspires your designs in general?
Movies, traveling, and vintage photos. My parents’ vintage clothing is my source of inspiration. Right now, it’s been important for me to be inspired by my childhood influences and by who my customer is.
How do you feel about your Spring/Summer 2012 collection being available at Tender?
Tender is a beautiful store. I’m incredibly excited about this, since I grew up in Michigan and have friends and family in the area. The most rewarding part of having your own collection is having a store like Tender carry your line and having it available to people I grew up around.
What is your design aesthetic?
I prefer tailored cuts, but adding elements of femininity and modern details to make it my own. I’m typically drawn to styles that are tailored and have small details that make it different or modern. I also love subtle patterns combined together or bold, graphic patterns in a classic silhouette.
What decade inspires you the most?
I love the silhouettes, color blocking, and preppiness of the 1960s. The men’s wear and utilitarian details from the 1940s also really inspire me.
Any tips for staying stylish during the cold winter months?
I do love layering and outerwear pieces. I think a vest under or over a jacket or blazer is great. Outerwear can also dress up or dress down a look, so I always view it as a staple and a must.
