Feb. 29 — better known as Leap Day — only comes once every four years. Check out these family-friendly events in metro Detroit to savor the extra hours.

Leap Day Party

Join the Bowen Branch of the Detroit Public Library for family-fun this Leap Day. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the library, which highlights literacy and learning by providing the community with diverse and dynamic pathways, will have treats, games, and even a piñata for the mini-party. Leap Day at the Library

A fit for kids 3 years of age and older, this Feb. 29 event features a story time focused on all things that hop. Kids can also enjoy a variety of activities and a craft-making opportunity. No cost.  Leap Day Kolor with Kitties

Cuddle up with cats at this event hosted by local pet store franchise Pet Supplies Plus. From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., participants have the chance to complete coloring projects while spending time in the shop’s Kitty City space. No cost. Leap Year Celebration

Offering admission and skate rental at no cost for those with Leap Day birthdays, the Frankenmuth Rink at Campus Martius invites the public to skate from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Feb. 29. Participants can glide to the sounds provided by a live DJ underneath the night sky, and the Rinkside bar will feature a special Leap Year Cocktail — just for adults. For those who don’t have the special birthday, tickets range from $5-$10. Skate rental is $5 per person. Leapin’ Leap Day

Another kid-friendly Leap Day event will take place at the Lyon Township Public Library. From 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., children can express their silly side with stories, games, and songs, including a remix of “Happy Birthday” called “Happy Leap Day to You!.” No cost, but registration is required. Leap Day Family Fun

All ages are welcome at the Boll Family YMCA on Feb. 29 for Leap Day Family Fun. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., enjoy swimming in either of the two indoor swimming pools; exercising in the health & wellness center; the three-lane track; the dance/exercise studios; basketball, squash, or racquetball; or trying your hand at the 40-foot climbing wall.
