With a mission to honor Black women entrepreneurs and leverage the energy of this weekend’s full moon, communications design firm Loud Social is hosting a one-day self-care expo called The Takeoff on July 5. The event — which will take place at the Copper House, a cannabis-friendly bed and breakfast in Detroit — will feature demonstrations and sessions by Black women in the media, beauty, cannabis, and hospitality industries.
Taking place from 11:11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the day will kick off with drinks from mobile bartending concierge SIPS Company and a picnic-inspired vegan brunch by Lauren Gillon, the private chef and food blogger behind Millenial Meets Stove. “I find that food is a great way to bring people together no matter how they are connected,” Gillon says. “It breaks the ice for vulnerability and conversation, so I’m hoping that my menu options will nourish all of our guests while introducing their taste buds to healthier cooking options and creating opportunities for opening discussions and bonding.”
There are five sessions planned for the event. Tori J. Anderson, author, educator, podcaster and founder of the platform Teaching it Trill, will lead a session on how Black women can nurture their creative talents; Sydney Bowden, founder of Mother of Green Co., a platform that aims to normalize and celebrate marijuana use for women, will hold a session on using cannabis for self-care; beauty enthusiast and Youtuber Natty Rocberry and product developer Kelly Logan will host demonstrations on makeup and natural hair, respectively; and Golden Rosen Apothecary will lead a session on rituals for the self.
Along with the demonstrations, the event will also include different healing practices through mural painting, breathing techniques, and a bonfire.
All participants must wear masks at The Takeoff. Registration for the self-care expo is free, but Loud Social is collecting funds to benefit National Expungement Week. The grassroots organization hosts a week of events aimed at providing services to those with convictions on their records.
