Hook & Eye - Vintage

Hook & Eye Alterations, a new sustainability-focused shop that will feature a curation of vintage clothing and a full-service alterations studio, opens May 11 in Downtown Ferndale.

Products in the store, located at 234 E. Nine Mile Rd., are sourced from estate sales and consigning relationships with vintage collectors. Items from Detroit vendors, such as sunglasses from Alley and Eye and accessories from Eat Da Rich, will also be available for purchase. Both clothing and alterations services, which includes full-service tailoring and custom projects, are available for all genders, sizes, and occasions.

Co-owners Allison Kendzorski and Leah DiPace, who also work as the shop’s master tailor and vintage curator respectively, say the mission behind these offerings is to create a sustainable and inclusive space that embraces individuality and the slow-fashion movement, a sartorial philosophy that strives for zero waste and focuses more on quality of garments rather than quantity. “Being a part of the growing slow fashion movement is something we hold dear to our hearts,” says DiPace. “Fashion should be fun and not exploitive. At Hook & Eye we are teaching and embracing a new way to dress.”

vintageThe front half of the 750-square-foot store is home to a showroom, while the back half houses the sewing room and a private fitting room. Aligning with Kendzorski and DiPace’s sustainability goals, Hook and Eye’s interior features wood shelving, dress racks, and window frames. The pieces are by Waterford Township-based business Reclaimed Michigan, which repurposes materials from old buildings and barns. Clothing racks are also repurposed from steel gas pipelines.

Hook & Eye will celebrate its grand opening with an open house from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 11. The event will give locals a chance to view the store’s collection of vintage clothing as well as view alteration demonstrations. Following the event, the shop will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday; 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday.
