Patti Smith, Madonna, and Aretha Franklin are just a few of the women with ties to Michigan and Detroit who have made an impact on the music scene. And they’re well-represented in the Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum in May.
The traveling exhibit was created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. It focuses on more than 70 artists and includes artifacts such as Lady Gaga’s infamous “meat dress,” Joan Jett’s leather jacket, and Bessie Smith’s sheet music for “Oh Daddy Blues.” Of course, there’s a spot for ’60s girl groups and icons such as Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and Grace Slick.
Original MTV VJ Nina Blackwood will host a preview on May 15 (tickets are $125). The exhibit runs through Aug. 17. Admission is free for members.
