Wu Coup

Designs by Jason Wu, the 26-year-old Taiwan-born designer made instantly famous by Michelle Obama, are now available in metro Detroit.

Well before Wu became a household name — thanks to publicity surrounding his inaugural-gown design — he was spotted by Karen Daskas, co-owner of Tender, the downtown Birmingham fashion boutique. Last September, Daskas secured and purchased Wu’s spring collection. “We were behind him before he was even approached to do anything for Michelle [Obama],” Daskas says.

The young designer became an overnight sensation when the first lady wore his one-shouldered, white gown studded with delicate flowers and Swarvoski crystals to the inaugural ball.

Last year, Wu and his sales director stopped by Tender and personally selected the store as an exclusive Michigan carrier. Wu’s collection of blouses, skirts, and dresses retails for $615 to $5,475 at Tender.
