Started in 2012 with the simple goal of making a day that encourages people to do good, “Giving Tuesday” has grown into an annual worldwide movement that inspires people to celebrate generosity.

For this year’s “Giving Tuesday,” you can give back to your community by supporting one or more of the nonprofit organizations in the metro Detroit area.

Soup Kitchens

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves the metro Detroit area through more than just food, but also clothing and human development programs. Monetary donations and donations such as clean, gently-used quality clothing, winter gear, new men’s and women’s underwear, socks, and hygiene items are greatly appreciated. St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen

St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization that has been around since the early 1900’s, starting as an informal food service, and soon, a safe haven during the Detroit Rebellion of 1967. These days, although the location has changed, their goal of providing a hot meal and other social services to the community remains the same. Animal Shelters/Animal Aid

Michigan Animal Rescue League

The Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) is dedicated to providing the highest quality of life for dogs and cats through rescue, medical care, socialization and behavioral support, and more, with the goal of adoption and community outreach. Detroit Dog Rescue

Detroit Dog Rescue is Detroit’s first no-kill shelter focused on raising awareness for the homeless stray dogs of Detroit. Dog Aide

Dog Aide is the largest nonprofit outreach organization in Michigan and assists dog owners by providing access to the resources, care, and assistance they need in order to keep families who are experiencing financial hardships and struggles with their pets. Monetary donations and donations such as dog bowls, flea and tick prevention, dog treats, dog toys and more are welcome. CARE House of Oakland County

CARE House is a nonprofit children’s advocacy center in Oakland County, providing services to victims of child abuse and neglect, programs focused on the identification and treatment of child abuse victims, and child abuse prevention. Freedom House Detroit

Freedom House Detroit is a safe place for people seeking humanitarian protection and a place to live while applying for protection in the U.S. or Canada. Freedom House Detroit provides a place for clients to stay for up to two years, trained legal representation, and several other services. Ruth Ellis Center

The Ruth Ellis Center provides a long- and short-term safe space for runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, offering primary and behavioral healthcare, support services and more. Open Door Outreach Center

Open Door aims to provide emergency services of food, clothing, and referral information to families in need. Monetary donations are accepted online through general donations as well as holiday donations, where people are welcome to participate in their Meal Program and Adopt-A-Family Program to help brighten the holidays. Donations are also welcome to the Open Door Thrift Store, where items are both given to qualifying families and sold to the public.
