When Street Beet permanently closed in February, metro Detroit vegans and lovers of plant-based eats grieved the loss of the pop-up restaurant and its creative take on fast-food favorites. Now, they have a new lineup of vegan dishes to enjoy at Public House.

The Ferndale restaurant announced in May that it would be working with Street Beet co-founder and chef Meghan Shaw on its food offerings. Today, under Shaw’s guidance as culinary consultant, Public House is debuting an updated vegan dinner menu. Its new vegan brunch menu will be available starting June 25.

Diners can expect to see about a dozen new items designed by Shaw on the restaurant’s vegan dinner menu. There’s a Fried Chikn Sammie, which can be ordered spicy or traditional, as well as Fish & Chips made with beer-battered tofu, a Po’Boy with crispy smoked mushrooms, an enchilada burrito plate, Queso Dippy, Lemon Pepper Wet Wings, and vegan nachos. The Public House garden burger has also been replaced with an Impossible “bacon” cheeseburger. It’s topped with tempeh bacon, steak sauce aioli, and crispy fried onions.

New brunch menu items include The Griddler Sammy, which is comprised of a vegan sausage patty, Just Egg, and “cheddar” between two pancake buns, and the Chik’n in a Biscuit, a vegan chicken breast and pickles served on a jalapeño-cheddar biscuit and topped with hot honey. There are also new vegan brunch plates such as Chickn’ & Waffles, a tempeh-bacon Monte Cristo, crispy shrimp and grits, a crab cake Benedict, and a wet breakfast burrito.

Public House, located at 241 W. Nine Mile Road, reopened in December 2021 with a two-part menu: one side dedicated to vegan items and the other for dishes with meat and dairy products. The restaurant is open for dinner Monday through Sunday, and it serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
