BIRMINGHAM SUSHI CAFÉ: Young and Hoim Hwang depart from the strictly traditional to offer what they call Asian fusion cuisine in both menu and artistic décor. Because they are of Korean heritage, they’ve added Korean specialties to the Japanese menu, including bi bim bop, probably the best known dish to non-Koreans. Japanese dishes such as shrimp tempura, and chicken, salmon or beef teriyaki, arrive at the table at lunch in a bento box, the compartmented lacquer tray, with dipping sauce, rice, and California or spicy tuna roll. BAMBU CAFÉ: Small restaurants have a certain charm, and this well-kept spot with just 30 seats bears that out. Chef/proprietor Brandon Kahlich offers a varied menu of such dishes as chicken and vegetable pot-stickers, Mediterranean chicken, crab cakes, organic pizzas, and Angus steak burgers on his all-day menu, which includes housemade ice cream and signature cupcakes.  Cooking demonstrations every Tuesday evening are proving popular. 75 Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Farms; 313-640-4115.
