Not to get too heavy, but all life depends on salt. As for food, it makes everything taste better, right? That’s partly what inspires this twist on a Manhattan by Jarrod Kassis, beverage director at The Conserva in Ferndale. The name comes from one of his favorite Counting Crows songs. “You just know what tastes right together,” he says. We know how salt works with tequila, but can it enhance bourbon? Yes, it can. Kassis gave us a “stash” of smoked salt to experiment with at home. When you’re out of bourbon, he notes, it also works well on vegetable dishes.
Ingredients
1 ½ ounces bourbon
¾ ounce Luxardo Cherry Sangue Morlacco liqueur
1 teaspoon vanilla paste
1 pinch of applewood smoked salt
Directions
Add all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir thoroughly and strain. Serve straight up.
