Yes, Grand Rapids has been designated Beer City, USA, but people on the east side of the state certainly hold their own when it comes to enjoying craft beer.
Ferndale certainly represents the Michigan beverage scene with its diverse offerings. It is the home to adult beverage makers Woodward Avenue Brewers, Valentine Vodka, B Nektar Meadery, and Shramm’s Mead. Drinkers can find Michigan craft beer in almost every establishment in the city that serves alcohol.
Ferndale is also home to two powerhouse Michigan craft beer supporters: the retailer 8 Degrees Plato Beer Company and the Hour Detroit magazine 2013 winner for Best Beer Selection, One-Eyed Betty’s. Both of these establishments are offering something special for craft beer lovers this holiday season.
The Gift of Beer
8 Degrees Plato Beer Company is now offering the Craft Box Club. For a one-time $5 membership fee and a monthly cost of $45 per box, 8 Degrees Plato will prepare a specially wrapped box containing craft beer, artisanal foods, and beer-themed items.
The 8 Degrees staff hand-fills the boxes with craft beer and other complementary products. A description card accompanies each box explaining the contents, which can vary greatly from glassware and Mindo’s Michigan-made chocolate to McClure’s Pickles.
The boxes can be picked up in person at the store or be shipped anywhere in the United States for an additional charge.
8 Degrees Plato can also create unique craft boxes for everyone (over 21) on your holiday list, including clients, customers, colleagues, friends, and family. For larger quantities or corporate gifts, contact the staff at either 248-808-6477 or email.
Customers must be 21 or older to purchase a membership or craft beer box.

Holiday Beer FestivALE
One-Eyed Betty’s is hosting FestivALE on November 23, from noon to midnight. Spanning Troy Street in Ferndale from Woodward to Allen, FestivALE will take place on the street, in a heated tent in the adjacent parking lot, and inside the restaurant itself. After midnight, the party moves inside until the regular 2 am closing time.
Street performers and bonfires will line Troy Street as FestivALE-goers enjoy a selection of Christmas, seasonal, and specialty beers from Bell’s Brewery, Dark Horse Brewing Company, and Arbor Brewing Company. Food stations will provide a menu from Detroit Burger Brawl 2013 winning chef Emmele Herrold, and will include roast pig, lamb or goat, a giant tartiflette, and long apple strudel.
Beer garden-seating and Americana music will fill the air in the heated tent, with live performances from The Ragbirds, The Crane Wives, Ryan Dillaha & The Miracle Men, Oak Bones, and more.
Inside One-Eyed Betty’s will be a 30-tap Short’s Takeover, including many beers that are regularly only available at Short’s taproom in Bellaire. In conjunction with the tap takeover, 30 pinball machines will fill the main dining room.
Tickets are $20 in advance/$25 at the door and include entry, entertainment, and a commemorative 16 oz. cup. Food and beer are not included in the admission price but wooden tokens can be purchased for $5 each or 8 for $35 — all food items and beverages will be available for one token each.
