LOCAL KITCHEN & BAR:
The corner space on Ferndale’s busy West Nine Mile Road, formerly occupied by Via Nove, has been updated and toned down to emphasize the comfort-food approach of proprietor Rick Halberg. The menu offers many familiar dishes — from burgers and potpies to mac ’n’ cheese — carefully prepared and served in a high-ceilinged room and covered patio with a two-sided fireplace. No frou-frou, just the light from pillar candles and blue-and-white dishtowel napkins atop uncovered wood tables, including what Halberg calls a “common” table to underscore the neighborhood feeling of a place he hopes will become a local hangout.

HYDE PARK PRIME STEAKHOUSE:
In the shadow of the Birmingham Theatre marquee, in a space that formerly housed Forte, this plush steakhouse offers 28-day aged prime, and 36-, 40-, and 50-day dry-aged prime, as well as Kobe-style Wagyu beef in a clubby setting that flows from the spacious cocktail lounge at the entrance to well-decorated dining rooms with handsomely appointed tables. An extensive wine list accompanies the menu that also features platters of chilled seafood. Service is emphasized.
