MACCABEES AT MIDTOWN
The ground floor of the historic Maccabees Building is home to a new restaurant offering a menu that combines big deli sandwiches with a contemporary American array of dishes. Its location in Detroit’s cultural center makes it a good stop-off for those visiting the DIA just across the street. Early in the day, egg dishes, pancakes, and corned-beef hash are the focus, followed by salads and sandwiches at lunch. This former gas station has been wittily updated to retain its vintage 1930s appeal. Red Crown’s menu fits the setting with an emphasis on unfussy, skillfully prepared American dishes such as wood-smoked baby-back ribs, pork shoulder, fish and chips, and shrimp and grits.
