Arthur Avenue /// Named for a Bronx street that’s a cluster of Italian restaurants, this sibling of Au Cochon offers a refreshingly down-to-earth menu that doesn’t pretend to be anything more than what it is. Big meaty sandwiches, spaghetti and meatballs, veal Marsala, and eggplant Parmesan typify the fare. It’s casual and unpretentious and another of Zack Sklar’s Peas & Carrots Hospitality group that includes Social Kitchen, Mex, and Beau’s Grillery. 260 N. Old Woodward Ave., Birmingham; 248-480-0768. L & D daily. $16

Greenspace Café /// The soothing setting of wood, flickering candles, potted plants, and soft lighting is the backdrop for a vegan menu served with style. Two high-ceilinged rooms include a cocktail bar where fruits and botanicals testify to the restaurant’s theme. Dr. Joel Kahn’s haven for vegans also appeals to those who aren’t, but who appreciate craft cocktails and house-made cuisine. The menu includes a number of salads, typified by quinoa with roasted cashews atop a bed of greens, pre-dinner morsels of root vegetables, grilled redskins, and Broccolini, and such entrees as tamale pie, coconut curry with red and green peppers and organic rice, and rigatoni with pesto. Service by a professional staff is knowledgeable and friendly. 215 W. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale; 248-206-7510. D Tue.-Sat. $14
