Authentic Spanish tapas from the perspective of Pilar Baron Hidalgo, a native of Seville, Spain, are served in a small storefront in Detroit’s Midtown. The single room, bright with Spanish tiles and colorful posters, includes a small bar, an open kitchen, and seats for just 35 at closely packed tables built with reclaimed wood from Detroit houses. The changing array of tapas, to be ordered in multiples, includes many classics such as bacon-wrapped dates, pork and rice sausage, charcuterie plates, and grilled fresh sardines. After closing his long-running Middle Kingdom in Ann Arbor, Wai Chong (Johnny) Tam moved to Farmington Hills, where he serves two menus: one in Chinese, the other in English to accommodate Asian and non-Asian taste buds. The choices include spicy Chinese dishes typified by tofu with ground pork and crispy duck, as well as Americanized fare such as sesame chicken and cashew beef.
