Metro Detroit is getting a little sweeter. Spun Sugar, a local mobile cotton candy company, is expanding its operations and opening its first brick-and-mortar store in South Lyon this summer.
Located at 10630 N. Rushton Road, the roughly 900-square-foot space will house a factory and retail shop. The latter is aiming for a mid-August launch and will feature pink walls and an eight-foot gumball machine, among many other fun decorations. “It’s going to be visually pleasing… I want the experience to be fun, colorful, candy-shop vibes,” says owner Mandy Tamborini.
The Spun Sugar shop will carry over 50 cotton candy flavors, including the brand’s most popular options, champagne and birthday cake. Summer flavors include key lime and lemon meringue. The store will also be selling other treats, including Motor City Popcorn, Bea’s Lemonade, and D’Vine Cookies. “I’m trying to carry all Detroit products in our store,” Tamborini says.
Hand-spun cotton candy cones will be available on an opening menu, but Tamborini says Spun Sugar will mostly sell pre-packaged items to comply with COVID-19 safety standards. She is also creating “family packs,” complete with popcorn, cotton candy, and lemonade, for those who want a little bit of everything to-go. “I just really want people to have fun experiences…” says Tamborini. “I really want people to leave happy and just enjoy it because this is a hard time.”
Eventually, Spun Sugar will offer soft-serve ice cream, seating options, and maintain regular hours Monday through Saturday. Tamobrini is also hoping to open a Detroit location.
Tamborini has been working on the South Lyon space since she signed a lease in November 2019. She has been selling her cotton candy and cotton candy cakes online since 2017 and has also been offering mobile services with her cotton candy cart. Spun Sugar works with companies such as the Pistons, Ford Field, the Detroit Opera House, and Disney on Ice.
