Six Metro Detroit Stores to Check Out on Small Business Saturday

Looking for more unique gift ideas that don’t entail braving Black Friday crowds? Shop small. Launched in 2010, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to support local independent retail stores. From food to records, here are six local businesses to patronize this Saturday – and throughout the holiday season.

The Farmer’s Hand: This locally sourced grocery store, which opened in September, has plenty of Michigan-made holiday goodies for all ages and is committed to providing fresh groceries to Detroit. The proprietors of this part grocery store/part café has recruited over 100 local partners, and they’re also committed to giving 70 percent of their profits back to their partners. On Small Business Saturday, they’ll be selling Michigan Gift Boxes at special prices.

Detroit Artifactry: Based in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, this home goods shop boasts industrial, artisanal, and vintage pieces carefully curated by Gail Kwiatkowski and her husband, who scour antique malls, garage sales, flea markets, and estate sales around the country. It’s a bit of a treasure hunt, but worth it for the gems you’ll find for the hard-to-shop for person on your list. For Small Business Saturday, they will be offering 10 percent off anything in the whole store.

Todd’s Room: At this Birmingham beauty apothecary, Todd’s Room has built a loyal following among its clients. Stop in and pick up a gift card or browse the Todd Beauty products like makeup, perfume, and body lotion. The salon will be offering 20 percent off all merchandise in honor of Small Business Saturday.

The Black Dress: This Midtown boutique specializes in classic, conservative styles for all sizes. The mother-daughter duo who run the store are also experienced dressmakers and can make custom pieces, perfect for fashionistas. After Small Business Saturday, The Black Dress will host “Small Business Week,” leading up to Noel Night.

Paramita Sound: With vinyl records and cassette tapes used and new, Paramita Sound will have something unique for every music lover’s taste. Located in the West Village of Detroit, this barely-year-old record store features local labels and friendly and knowledgeable staff.
