Q: Which cosmetic procedure can best rejuvinate my look for the new year?
A: “Every woman’s facial anatomy, skin type, and degree of aging differ, so one procedure does not fit all,” says Dr. Myra Danish, M.D., F.A.C.S. “I recommend a consultation and facial analysis to determine what is the minimum the patient needs to look younger and fresher. We discuss the options that will give them the best results.”
For some patients, injectables are all that’s needed. Injectables are ideal for crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines, laugh lines, and marionette lines, as well as for adding volume to correct flattening of the checks. With the injectable Lunchtime Lift™, Dr. Danish uses a range of FDA-approved injectables to help her patients look 10 years younger in less than an hour and with little to no downtime.
“My analysis may show that they require plastic surgery such as upper and lower eyelid lifts, a browlift, or a face-lift. There are several different types of facelifts, including a full face-lift and a mini version. The midface Lunchtime Lift ™ can restore the patient’s facial anatomy to where it was over a decade ago in just one hour.”
Dr. Danish may recommend nonsurgical skin treatments, including laser photo facials, glycolic peels, and deeper peels to treat sun damage, uneven pigmentation, redness, and spider veins.
“All of my patients look rejuvenated and natural, not like they’ve had work done,” Dr. Danish adds.

Q: What are the advantages of treating leg veins in the winter time?
A: “People don’t think about their varicose or spiders veins in the winter, but this is the perfect time of year to get treated so you can be ready to wear shorts when the weather warms up,” says Jeffrey Miller, M.D., of Miller Vein.
“With changes in health care coming, now is a good time to come in for treatments that you know are currently covered by insurance,” he adds, noting that medical treatment of varicose veins is usually covered. “Our offices are really busy now with people trying to get in before any major insurance changes.”
Typically, patients wear a stocking for a little while after varicose vein treatment, and it’s more comfortable to wear stockings in the winter.
At Miller Vein, a world-class team of board-certified interventional radiologists use the latest state-of-the-art, nonsurgical treatments, which are virtually pain-free and require no downtime.
“Varicose veins are easily treated in the office. The procedures are done through tiny, pencil-tip-sized incisions that don’t require sutures,” Dr. Miller explains. “Patients are up and walking immediately after their procedure, and they are thrilled with their results.”
Spider veins are treated in less than 30 minutes. Even the tiniest of spider veins, including facial veins, can be eliminated with Miller Vein’s VeinErase™ procedures.
“Our spider vein treatments are very easy on patients,” Dr. Miller says. “People can drive themselves to and from treatment on a lunch break.”
Don’t live with the pain and embarrassment of varicose or spider veins. Make a New Year’s resolution to get legs like new!

Q: Should I wait until spring to have cosmetic surgery?
A: “I think of the winter months as a time for introspection and reinvention,” says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Sherbert. “People will often say, ‘If I’m going to do something about my appearance, this is the time to do it.’
“Early in the new year is a great time for people to come in if they’re interested in having breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, liposuction, eyelid lifts, a facelift, or other cosmetic surgery,” he says. “During the winter, people tend to stay indoors and socialize less. Patients take advantage of that to have surgery, and they ‘re-emerge’ weeks later looking refreshed and renewed.”

Q: What is the modern approach to eyelid surgery?
A: While the old technique for eyelid surgery typically involves the removal of loose skin and fat pouches, often there are many other problems related to the aging of the eye that should be addressed. Aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda looks at the framework of the eye, from the eyebrow to the cheek.
“Changes that can occur around the eye include a loss of volume as the tissues deflate. The orbital bones can thin, and the eyeball will look sunken, with hollow circles under the lower lid. Both the eyebrow and the cheek also can lose volume,” says Dr. Gowda, whose philosophy is to avoid the removal of too much tissue and fat, which can eventually lead to a sunken eye appearance.
“To create a youthful-looking eye, I take out some skin, as well as fat that is sagging where it should not be. I often reposition fat or add fat through fat grafting. Volume may be needed under the brow, or in the cheek and the hollows under the lower lids, to create a smooth lid/cheek junction,” Dr. Gowda explains. “The muscles might also be tightened to help support the lower eyelids.”
Dr. Gowda has been doing fat grafts for 15 years. He believes that the patient’s own fat is the best filler.
“Fat contains a much higher number of stem cells than bone marrow, and it causes no immune problems,” he says. “The skin looks radiant and glowing after fat injections, and fat also improves dark circles.”

Ahmet R. Karaca, M.D.
Q: Can I get a good result from a mini face-life?
A: “Be careful when choosing a cosmetic procedure just because it costs less or appears to involve less surgery,” says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ahmet Karaca. “I have seen patients a year or two after they’ve had lesser procedures by other physicians. They were very unhappy and I did corrections for them.”
Seek a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon to help you get the best results for your area of concern.
“If you ask for recommendations from friends and physicians, you will find the same names keep coming up — doctors who do a lot of surgery and have very good reputations,” says Dr. Karaca, who has had a busy cosmetic surgery practice for nearly 35 years. “At a consultation, the doctor shouldn’t be trying to sell you something. I treat my patients as I would a family member and recommend the very best solution for what is troubling them about their appearance.”
