NATURE LOVERS WILL REJOICE as they take in the refreshing spring air and experience the beauty of Ohio’s wildflowers and captivating waterfalls on a trip to any one of the state’s most beautiful destinations.
1. HOCKING HILLS. Encounter more than 40 species of wildflowers, including rarities like white and red trillium. Take in the beauty of Hocking Hills State Park’s Upper Falls and Lower Falls, or the Ash Cave waterfall — one of the highest falls in the state, where water plummets nearly 90 feet into a sandstone cave.
2. MOHICAN STATE PARK. Experience low flow falls, which are best seen during a two-mile hike beginning at the park’s covered bridge. The Big and Little Lyons Falls are both located on small streams that flow into the gorge. Discover wildflowers including the round-leaved orchid — a rare bloom in Ohio.
3. CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK. The park’s 65-foot Brandywine Falls, one of the state’s largest and most scenic waterfalls, flows from Brandywine Creek and is featured along the Brandywine Gorge Trail. In the springtime, the forests come alive with short-lived wildflowers including spring beauty, yellow trout lily, Virginia bluebells, Jack-in-the-pulpit, and several species of trillium.
4. GRIGGS RESERVOIR PARK. Hayden Falls is uniquely situated a few miles south of downtown Dublin, where Hayden Run has carved a gorge on its way to the Scioto River. As you stroll through the park, keep an eye out for the red and yellow blooms of wild columbine growing on the rock walls.
5. CLIFTON GORGE STATE NATURE PRESERVE. Located in the quaint-yet-cool village of Yellow Springs you will find the preserve, which is hailed as one of the most spectacular sites in the state for viewing spring wildflowers. Check out the historic Clifton Mill, built in the early 1800s, and enjoy the views of a waterfall that’s high above the Little Miami River.
