You take your car to the mechanic for preventive maintenance. So why skip regular exams with your doctor or dentist?
Screening tests for high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, colorectal cancer, skin cancer, gum disease, and diabetes can detect disease at an early stage, before it becomes a more serious medical issue. It’s basic body maintenance — like checking the fluids and tire pressure of your car to avoid costly repairs down the road.
According to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 1 in 5 men smoke cigarettes, more than 34 percent are obese, and nearly a third have hypertension. Just over half of all men meet the federal guidelines for leisure time aerobic activity.
Bad lifestyle habits — smoking, lack of exercise, a poor diet — can lead to consequences for your overall health. Work on improving those risks. Find a method to ditch cigarettes. Park the car and walk when you can. Learn the basics of nutrition and healthy eating. When you’re on the road, avoid fast food drive-throughs.
Just as your car’s dashboard lights will signal problems, don’t ignore health warning signs, especially pain. Make sure the guy behind the wheel is running in top shape, just like his ride.
Q: I’m up for a promotion, competing with a “kid” in the office. Can a new smile help me get my edge back?
A: “Imagine walking into a room and flashing a big, bright, celebrity smile. It sends an instant message: ‘I’m happy, healthy, vital, and confident,’ ” says Dr. Craig Goldin, of the award-wining Cosmetic Dentistry Institute. His wife, Dr. Marcy Goldin, an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, agrees: “No matter what your dental needs are, we can create a picture-perfect smile that will leave a lasting impression.”
The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute provides an array of the most advanced technology and treatments, so that it’s easy, quick, and pain-free to transform your smile.
“Luminous, natural-looking porcelain veneers are carefully crafted to change the shape, size, color, and length of teeth that are crooked, chipped, or stained. If you have missing teeth, we can replace them with state-of-the-art dental implants that look, feel, and function like natural teeth and allow you to smile, chew, and speak more confidently,” says Dr. Craig Goldin, who is also a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists with advanced training and certification in IV sedation.
“Sedation dentistry is a wonderful and effective option for people who are busy, anxious, or who need a series of dental problems taken care of in just one visit,” says Dr. Marcy Goldin. “You can fall asleep wrapped in a blanket on a Tempur-Pedic cushion and wake up to a younger, healthier, beautiful smile.”

Q: How can I shave years off my looks so I can stay competitive in the job market?
A: Dr. Ellen Janetzke, a board-certified plastic surgeon, is seeing an upsurge in the number of men who are coming in for facial and body rejuvenation procedures. Eyelid surgery, laser treatments, injectables, and facelifts can help restore a youthful, chiseled profile.
“Lines, wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin can make you look tired, older, and less approachable. When you look younger, you’re perceived as more energetic, enthusiastic, and capable,” says Dr. Ellen, who takes an overall esthetic approach for naturally younger-looking results.
For men who struggle with persistent areas of fat, Dr. Ellen performs liposuction for a leaner and more defined appearance. Treatments for gynecomastia have increased tremendously.
“It’s not uncommon for men to feel embarrassed about sagging skin on their chest,” Dr. Ellen says. “We remove the excess skin to give them a natural, masculine-looking chest that they don’t have to hide.”
Call Dr. Ellen today for a personalized consultation.

Q: My doctor said I need knee surgery. Is there an alternative treatment that doesn’t require a painful and lengthy rehabilitation?
A: Stem cell therapy is a breakthrough treatment for people who have chronic degenerative knee pain. We remove stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow and then inject those cells into the damaged knee joint to regrow articular cartilage that has worn down.
This brief outpatient procedure is safe, essentially pain-free, and requires little to no downtime. Patients have reported quick and progressive improvement. We were the first recipients of our treatment and have personally experienced the benefits.
Stem cell therapy is a one-time procedure for potentially life-long cartilage replacement. We are the first in Michigan to offer this therapy for multiple joints in the body.

Q: “My wife/partner is experiencing vaginal dryness and painful intercourse as a result of hormonal changes associated with menopause. Is there anything we can do to alleviate the symptoms and relieve her discomfort?”
A: Vaginal health issues that affect women of menopausal age, as well as breast cancer survivors, include vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, painful urination, and recurrent vaginal infections. When a woman cannot or will not take estrogen replacement therapy, or it has not given the relief sought, the MonaLisa Touch Laser provides a safe, effective, and nonsurgical therapy that revitalizes the vagina by stimulating collagen and revascularization within the vaginal wall. Simply put, it helps to restore the pH balance and stimulate lubrication to premenopausal levels, which helps to alleviate the painful symptoms.
This procedure restores vaginal health quickly and painlessly. The recommended treatment includes three sessions spaced at six-week intervals; each treatment takes less than five minutes. Most women will report noticeable changes after just one session. There is no anesthesia required and there are no documented adverse side effects. What women do report is a new lease on life after having addressed vaginal pain using the MonaLisa Touch Laser.

Q: What is the latest nonsurgical breakthrough for taking years off your face?
A: Dr. Eric Seiger is one of only a few select physicians in the country now trained in the world-renowned, Y-Lift technique — a minimally-invasive, “lunch time” lift. The Y-Lift is a nonsurgical, in-office, no-incision, no-downtime procedure that gives amazing instant results.
Here’s how it works: As we age, the face gradually loses volume. Facial bone structure begins to soften and shrink. We lose our high cheekbones and contoured jawline and chin. This makes the skin appear to be sagging.
Unlike a surgical facelift, where skin is removed to fit the remaining bone structure, the Y-Lift replaces lost bone and fatty tissue by rebuilding the facial structure with FDA-approved fillers. Dr. Seiger uses a specialized instrument under the skin to gently lift and contour the depressed muscles, fat, and fascia. Then he injects naturally occurring hyaluronic acid to volumize the face.
“Patients can get an incredible youthful appearance, without surgery, that was never possible before,” says Dr. Seiger, who trained with Y-Lift creator Dr. Yan Trokel. “The Y-lift takes just 30 to 40 minutes. It requires only local anesthesia, and the rejuvenating effects last from one to two years. I am truly in awe of this remarkable procedure.”

Q: How can physical therapy take me from pain to performance on the golf course?
A: Whether you’re an amateur or an elite golfer, physical therapists at Team Rehabilitation can assess the cause of your pain and develop a plan of therapy for improvement. “The most common problems we see are back pain, shoulder pain, and elbow pain,” says Steve Scher, MSPT, clinic director at Team Rehab Royal Oak, and one of several Titleist Performance Institute-certified Team Rehab therapists. “There are a myriad of therapy techniques. It depends on where you’re hurting and what’s causing it.”
Therapists often work with golf professionals to improve the mechanics of a golfer’s swing. “A golf pro might say, ‘My client needs more flexibility in his hips,’ ” Scher notes. “We can address any physical problems with whatever the golf pro is working on to optimize the individual’s recovery and get them playing again.”
Elite golfers coming off an injury may seek help to return to a high level of play — they want to increase their driving distance or lower their handicap. Doing corrective exercises in the clinic and following up at home can help improve impairments and allow golfers to stay pain-free. “Don’t stop because you feel better,” Scher adds. “It might be only a handful of exercises, but you need to maintain a certain level to be able to golf weekly or monthly without pain.”

Q: What is the treatment for enlarged breasts in men?
A: Gynecomastia, the enlargement of glandular breast tissue in men, can cause emotional stress in those who are afflicted. Dr. Mune Gowda, a board-certified plastic surgeon, has seen a significant increase in the number of young and older men who are seeking help.
“Enlargement of the breast can be the result of hormonal changes, medications, or underlying medical conditions. Estrogen-containing foods may also be a risk factor. It’s important to see a physician for a clinical diagnosis,” Dr. Gowda says.
“There are several treatment options. For most men, we remove the fatty tissue and flatten the chest using laser-assisted liposuction, which provides excellent results. In some men, we remove all of the glandular tissue through a very small incision underneath the areola. The tiny scar is barely visible. We complete the procedure with laser-assisted liposuction to sculpt the chest and tighten loose skin. Downtime is minimal and the patient has a quick recovery.”

Q: How can posture alignment improve my backache?
A: “Poor posture is the primary cause of neck and back problems,” says physical therapist and Pilates instructor Ron Jegadeesh, the owner of Pilates Fitness & Physical Therapy Center.
“If you sit, stand, or walk without proper posture, one muscle group works harder and becomes stronger than another muscle group. The stronger muscle gets tighter and lacks flexibility, while the weaker muscle loses strength.”
Posture alignment is an integral component of every Pilates exercise. In fact, many people achieve far better results with Pilates-based physical therapy than with traditional physical therapy.
“When you do Pilates you have a sense of power, grace, elegance of movement, and self-confidence,” Jegadeesh explains. “The first thing people notice is that their posture and alignment have changed. They feel like they’ve grown an inch taller. As the sessions progress, they notice improved flexibility and strength.”
Pilates includes mat work without equipment, and exercises using a reformer to assist and resist movement.
“At each session I also teach exercises that the client can do at home or at work,” Jegadeesh adds. “I ask them to make a habit of keeping their body in good alignment as they go about their daily activities. They learn to sit taller, stand taller, and walk taller.”

Q: My drooping eyebrows make me look tired and old. What procedure can turn back the clock and has a quick recovery?
A: With aging, the eyebrows start to descend and can cause the upper eyelids to look droopy. This is more common in men, as they generally have heavier brows. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish says that a minimally invasive brow-lift can make a dramatic improvement.
“When I raise the brows to a youthful position, it lifts the upper eyelid area, opens the eyes, and improves the visual field. Patients look natural, more rested, and like a younger version of themselves.
“The endoscopic brow-lift involves five short incisions that are usually hidden in the hair line. Even with a receding hairline, the scars aren’t very noticeable. The surgery takes about an hour, with typically one week of recovery and minimal discomfort.”
Every person’s anatomy and aging is unique. You may need a brow-lift or an upper eyelid-lift alone, or a combination of both. Call Dr. Danish to schedule a facial analysis and consultation.

Q: How does gum disease affect our overall health?
A: One of every two American adults aged 30 and older has periodontal disease, a bacterial infection causing inflammation in the gums that can lead to tooth loss and contribute to many serious health problems. A growing body of research is showing a connection between gum disease and other diseases and conditions, including heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, stroke, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s.
Poor oral hygiene encourages bacterial growth. Researchers theorize that bacteria can seep into the bloodstream and settle in other parts of the body, triggering inflammation and increasing the risk of clots in blood vessels. The bacteria may cause the liver to produce C-reactive protein, a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Oral bacteria has been found to make its way into arteries, colorectal tumors, and brain tissue.
A number of studies point to a correlation between gum disease and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. Research shows that people with periodontal disease have a greater chance of developing early symptoms of diabetes and have more difficulty controlling blood sugar levels.
While research is ongoing, periodontal disease and its health risks should not be ignored. Periodontal disease screening and oral bacteria screening can be done painlessly and easily. Call today to schedule an assessment with Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel.

Q: How can implant dentistry change people’s lives?
A: “One of the earliest recollections I have of implants improving a patient’s quality of life was during my implant fellowship in New York City, Dr. Abdullah Sayed says. I had just finished my first major implant surgery on a patient who was a chef at a top local restaurant. Immediately after the surgery, I converted his existing removable denture into a fixed unit that he would never have to remove again. I advised him to try out his new teeth and to come back in two weeks. To my surprise, he returned in a few hours with a huge platter of food, noting that all his adult life he had been preparing food for people without ever being able to enjoy it himself. That day, for the first time in years, he was able to smile confidently and savor the simple joy of eating.”
Although Dr. Sayed is a specialist in both the surgical and restorative components of implants, he prefers a team approach, focusing solely on the surgical aspects and working in partnership with his restorative colleagues. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is committed to using cutting-edge technology to help his patients improve their quality of life.

Q: How can I increase my longevity and overall health?
A: Lifestyle changes have the greatest impact on our health and well-being. Start with your diet, and eliminate foods that trigger inflammation, including sugar and saturated fats. Inflammation is a major cause of aging and a significant risk for disease.
Uncontrolled stress also can produce inflammation. Learn to manage stress with exercise, meditation, prayer, yoga, or other coping methods. Go outdoors and connect with nature. Practice random acts of kindness and service to others. Find your purpose and live it!
While you can make lifestyle changes on your own, for optimal health and wellness, turn to Cutler Integrative Medicine. Dr. Doug Cutler, N.D., takes a holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of illness. He explores every area of a patient’s health — physical, emotional, social, environmental, spiritual — to discover and eliminate underlying causes of disease.
Through specialty testing, Dr. Cutler checks for concerns that are often overlooked, such as environmental toxic burdens, nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalance, neurotransmitter imbalance, genetic polymorphism, and food sensitivities. Even healthy foods cause inflammation. That’s why a sensitivity panel is critical, as everyone’s immune system reacts differently. Dr. Cutler gets to the root of a problem, eliminating guesswork so every patient receives individualized treatment ranging from customized detox therapies and pharmaceutical-grade supplements to botanical medicine and more.
Let Dr. Cutler and his team teach you how to enhance the health of your body, mind, and spirit for a prolonged, healthy life.

Q: Is there a minimally invasive procedure to correct receding gums?
A: With the Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, receding gums are typically treated with no cutting, no stitches, and virtually no pain. Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth was the first gum specialist in Michigan to be certified in the use of this minimally invasive technique by its originator and developer, Dr. John Chao.
“When gums recede, your teeth look much longer and your smile looks older. This condition also can lead to tooth sensitivity, decay, and bone loss,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “Using the Pinhole Technique, we make a small pinhole in the gum above the teeth to be treated. With special instruments we loosen up the gum tissue and bring it down over the receded areas, where it should be. This improves the smile tremendously and prevents further gum and bone recession and loss.”
Dr. Nemeth places Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) through the pinhole. A membrane derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF increases the blood supply in the gums, speeds healing, and further enhances the result.
The Pinhole Technique offers many advantages over traditional gum grafting, including no incisions or sutures, less discomfort, and a faster recovery, Dr. Nemeth says. “It’s a great technique. Patients do well and are extremely happy to have a healthier, more attractive smile.”

Q: What skin concerns are important to men, and how do you help men achieve a healthier, younger, more professional appearance?
A: Men struggle with skin issues like aging, brown spots, sensitivity, and breakouts, and require a unique approach to solving these problems. I have found that men benefit from understanding how small changes in their daily routine of cleansing and shaving can improve, rather than irritate, the skin. We offer low-maintenance solutions using high-quality products.
Although men often avoid doctor visits, they quickly realize the benefit of a quick and painless dermatology examination, where I screen for concerning lesions and we discuss reducing the risk of skin cancer.
Applying sunscreen when golfing or at a Tigers game is a start, but making this a daily habit results in smoother skin, prevents blotchiness, and decreases the likelihood of developing skin cancer.
Once the basics are covered, men also want to look younger, often using Botox to reduce deep furrows between the brows and hyaluronic acid fillers to combat the effects of gravity.
Understanding the unique needs of men, we customize an approach to repair, protect, and improve the quality and appearance of their skin.

Q: What types of massage and bodywork techniques can help keep me active and stress-free?
A: Whether you’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, active isolated stretching (AIS) can increase your performance by 30-50 percent. With AIS, isolated muscles are stretched for two to three seconds. The stretch is repeated several times, to maximize its effectiveness.
Golfers, runners, or busy CEOs can benefit from deep tissue massage to release muscular tension and help reduce chronic muscular pain and inflammation-related discomfort. A relaxing suction technique, Chinese cupping, also alleviates pain, especially in the lower back. Avoiding yoga practice? Traditional Thai massage (aka, “lazy man’s yoga”) allows you to let go of all tension as your massage therapist stretches and adjusts your limbs. It’s mandatory relaxation.

Q: What are the advantages of Sedation-Assisted Rapid Opiate Detox?
A: Unlike other opiate rehab programs, MDS treatment assists opiate users who want a faster detox, leading to a comprehensive rehabilitation. Withdrawals are managed under sedation and we initiate naltrexone maintenance therapy, which reduces cravings for the use of opiates. We facilitate abstinence with our treatment, coupled with subsequent therapy. Withdrawals are controlled and we do not use opiate replacements like buprenorphine.
The rapid detox procedure takes just one day. It significantly decreases physical and mental withdrawal symptoms while the patient is under sedation and monitored round-the-clock by board-certified doctors and registered nurses.
“Patients who are using opiates would like to stop, but they can’t because of the withdrawals,” says Dr. Joseph George, a board-certified addiction medicine specialist and co-owner of MDS Drug Detox. “We help them get off opiates under sedation, as it’s much easier and it leads to a faster recovery.”
Patients are discharged the day following treatment. They can be completely opiate-free in just three to four days, with no pain and no withdrawals. Sedation detox is the easiest path to naltrexone therapy.
“We put our patients on the opiate blocker naltrexone to reset their brain receptors, reduce their cravings, and prevent relapse to help them stay clean for life,” says Dr. Julia Aharonov, a board-certified anesthesiologist and co-owner of MDS Drug Detox. “Patients maintain their abstinence through psychotherapy, 12-step programs, and our free after-care.”
Don’t take weeks or months to detox. Call MDS Drug Detox today for your free consultation.

Q: What is the most powerful anti-aging hormone/substance in the world?
A: Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). As men age, levels of HGH/IGF-1 and other vital hormones decline, leading to hormone imbalance. This increases health risks and causes symptoms including low energy and sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fat gain, fatigue, weakness, decreased muscle mass and strength, depression, mood swings, and loss of concentration and memory.
Optimal hormone levels are essential for quality of life. Two of the most important hormones are insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and human growth hormone (HGH). Due to its powerful regenerative and rejuvenating properties, HGH/IGF-1 is the only hormone or substance on earth that prevents the deterioration of cells that occurs with aging. Other benefits of IGF-1/HGH include:
- Decreases body fat
- Increases muscle tone, mass, and strength
- Increases energy levels, sex drive, sexual function, and orgasms
- Improves sleep, memory and concentration
- Improves emotional well-being, stability, mood and reduces anxiety
- Improves the immune system
- Reduces inflammation
- Lowers blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Improves bone strength (lowers risk of osteoporosis)
- Improves skin integrity
- Reduces wrinkles
- Improves vision
- AND MUCH MORE!
Dr. George Shanlikian, medical director of Genemedics, is a pioneer in prescribing HGH/IGF-1, and one of a few physicians with the expertise to properly balance these hormones.

Q: Do adult men really need dental check-ups?
A: The short answer? Yes. Researchers from NYU’s Perlmutter Cancer Center recently found two types of bacteria common in periodontitis that could show who is most at risk for developing pancreatic cancer. This study “offers the first direct evidence that specific changes in the microbial mix in the mouth represent a likely risk factor to pancreatic cancer,” said Jiyung Ahn, Ph.D. at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting on April 19, 2016.
Similar results are popping up in studies on Alzheimer’s disease, kidney function decline, and metabolic syndrome. Men seem to be at higher risk, so what can you do?
See your dentist twice annually, and more often if you already have periodontal disease. Although it’s painless, this signals inflammatory responses that can lead to major problems. Measurements taken around each tooth indicate disease progression, and microscopic evaluation helps determine the type of bacteria that are present. Treatment is simpler in the early stages.
