Think cavities are just kid stuff? No matter what your age, tooth decay and other dental disease can mar your smile and affect your overall health. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of every two adults ages 30 and older has gum disease. Left untreated, unhealthy bacteria and inflammation in the mouth can lead to tooth loss, and gum disease is thought to be associated with diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions.
Life can get busy, but it only takes a few minutes each day to help maintain your smile and protect your oral health. Brushing your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day should be routine. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry recommends using an electric toothbrush for more effective cleaning, and suggests flossing before bedtime. Bacteria can do more damage while you sleep, as less saliva is produced to naturally clean the teeth and gums.
Good oral health habits also include eating a nutritious diet, avoiding sugary snacks and drinks, not smoking, and scheduling regular dental visits. How often should you see your dentist? The American Dental Association advises that the frequency of visits should be tailored by the dentist based on the patient’s oral health status, risk factors, and health history.
Dental professionals in metro Detroit are utilizing new technologies and techniques that reduce patient office time and make treatments safer, easier, and more comfortable. Take the time to learn how you can achieve a healthy, attractive smile for life.

Q: HOW CAN MY TEETH BE STRAIGHTENED IN ONLY SIX MONTHS?
A: For many adults with crooked teeth, the prospect of wearing braces for two or more years is frustrating and not practical. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Mitchell Milan offers a fast, predictable, inconspicuous, and affordable option: Six Month Smiles®.
“This technique uses clear braces and tooth- colored wires worn on the outer surfaces of the teeth that gently and quickly straighten the teeth,” he explains. “The mechanics of this technique are very good for achieving what adult patients want. They’re not necessarily looking for ideal orthodontics that can take years. The main focus of Six Month Smiles® is aesthetics — straightening your teeth and making your smile look much better without compromising function, and most likely improving function and dental health.”
Very low forces and short overall orthodontic treatment time increase the comfort and safety of the procedure. Six Month Smiles® is simple system, so patients aren’t bothered with having to make as many appointments to complete their treatment.
“Once treatment begins, patients come in once a month for observation. We assess the patient to make sure everything is stable and treatment is progressing the way it should be,” Dr. Milan explains.
Six Month Smiles® is typically less expensive than traditional braces, aligners, and veneers. This innovative technique is perfect for “combination treatment,” where Dr. Milan straightens teeth that are very crooked before placing veneers.
“Instead of removing excessive amounts of tooth structure to straighten the teeth using veneers only, you can be much more conservative after short-term treatment with Six Month Smiles®,” he says.

Q: WHAT TYPES OF ADVANCED SCREENING TOOLS AND TREATMENTS CAN IMPROVE MY ORAL HEALTH?
A: For Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel and her dental team, it has never been easier to help patients achieve the beautiful smiles and overall health they deserve. Offering contemporary treatments such as the CariFree System, which can actually prevent tooth-decay, and oral DNA testing, which has revolutionized therapies for advanced gum disease, this office is well-known for providing cutting-edge treatment. “Continuing education and innovation are at the heart of my practice,” Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says. “Dentistry is constantly changing. By utilizing the most advanced technology, such as our low-radiation digital X-ray system, I can precisely detect problem areas in their early stages. This enables me to provide the most conservative treatments for my patients.” We learn more every day about how our oral health is directly related to systemic health. Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says it’s important to partner with medical physicians, to ensure her patients have an excellent quality of life. Oral DNA testing not only provides a window into better treatments for gum disease; this screening tool can also test for the presence of HPV (human papilloma virus), which can lead to oral cancer. Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says frequent screenings and the awareness that one carries HPV are invaluable tools in the early detection of oral cancer. Q: WHAT IMAGING TOOL CAN HELP DIAGNOSE MY TMJ-RELATED SYMPTOMS?
A: A new study conducted by University of Minnesota researchers found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide an unprecedented look at both the hard structures and soft tissues of teeth, offering dentists better opportunities to fight oral diseases that are known to cause pain.
An MRI is also the most important tool for diagnosing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) conditions and diseases, as it provides high-image contrast between the mandibular nerve and the bony dental structures. Oakland MRI has a dedicated coil specifically for this kind of imaging.
The next time you need excellent and convenient imaging services from compassionate, courteous professionals, remember that you can choose the testing facility. Choose Oakland MRI. Experience the difference.

Q: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BONDED RESTORATIONS VERSUS SILVER MERCURY FILLINGS?
A: Dr. Timothy Mayer hasn’t given a patient a silver mercury filling in more than 20 years.
“For the health of my patients, I only do bonded cosmetic restorations. I won’t put silver mercury fillings in my mouth or in the mouths of my family because they’re 50 percent mercury. After five years, 50 percent of that mercury is gone,” he says. “Ninety-five percent of all silver fillings I’ve removed had decay under them. They leak.
“Bonded cosmetic restorations seal the tooth from decay, they cause less temperature sensitivity, they strengthen your teeth, and they decrease the fracturing of teeth, which helps to prevent the need for crowns,” Dr. Mayer explains. “When we remove silver mercury fillings, we are very careful and follow a strict protocol to protect our patients as well as our staff.”
A graduate of the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Mayer offers a full range of general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services.

Q: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS TO REPLACE MISSING TEETH?
A: “The advantages are many and great. Dental implants never get decayed and never need a root canal. They are meant to last a lifetime and they usually do,” says periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth. “Patients have more self-confidence with a stable, permanent implant. They don’t have to worry or feel embarrassed about a denture sliding around when they smile or talk or chew food.
“Cosmetically, when a tooth is lost, the bone in that area progressively shrinks, which may alter facial contours,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “When you place an implant in that area, it stimulates the bone and helps to maintain appearance and function for a better quality of life.”

Q: I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE AN ANALOGY TO HELP PATIENTS BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR TEETH AND HOW THEY FUNCTION. PLEASE EXPLAIN.
A: “Envision the upper jaw (maxilla) and the lower jaw (mandible) as two tables that oppose each other, each having 14 legs that support their respective edge of the table, and each having a special job (chewing or tearing). As the legs are worn — wherever they break, splinter, and become loose to the table base — they will require repair or replacement. Electing not to replace a leg will put more stress on the other legs. Depending on the forces on the table (chewing/grinding), it can be difficult to decide how to repair the wooden leg with pins, posts, and cores (crowns), or when it should be replaced with metal (titanium dental implants).”
With 30 years of experience as a “dental leg” repairman, Dr. Ben is here to help you. (By the way, he has created thousands of beautiful “tables.”)

Q: WHY A ROOT CANAL?
A: Root canal therapy is a proven, safe, and successful treatment to maintain dental health and function. A root canal procedure removes infected and/or inflamed tissue from inside the tooth, known as the dental pulp. It is an alternative to tooth extraction and allows for maintaining one’s natural dentition.
Often, pain that is felt in a tooth needing a root canal is relieved by the removal of the pulp tissue. Most procedures can be completed in a single visit, with local anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable. Following root canal therapy, the tooth most often requires a full-coverage restoration such as a crown.

Q: AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES?
A: While the American Association of Orthodontics suggests that children be seen by an orthodontist before the age of 7, there are no age restrictions for adults. The only pre-condition is that you have good oral health.
Orthodontist Dr. Nick Palmer utilizes the latest technologies to make treatment much easier, more comfortable, and often much quicker for all of his patients, including adults.
“The most innovative product is the FDA-approved appliance AcceleDent. You place it in your mouth for 20 minutes every day. As it vibrates, it accelerates orthodontic treatment by an average of 37 percent,” he explains.
“We have clear aesthetic brackets that are self-ligating and require fewer office visits. They’re often worn by celebrities. And there are braces that go on the insides of the teeth, called lingual braces, that you can’t see at all,” Dr. Palmer says. “We frequently use clear aligners to straighten the teeth of people who once wore braces, eliminating the need to wear braces again.”
For straighter teeth at any age, call Dr. Nick.
