DENTAL HEALTH – SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
Accessorizing your fall wardrobe? Studded gloves and rugged boots are dashing. A sculpted silver necklace and an embellished bag look chic. But silver fillings, yellowed teeth, and a crooked grin are just plain tacky in any season.
No matter what your style, dental professionals in metro Detroit have embraced the latest trends and technologies to make it more comfortable, convenient, and efficient to update your smile. Key high-tech tools include digital X-rays, digital impressions, soft-tissue dental lasers, 3-D imaging, in-office whitening, and CAD/CAM systems for one-visit custom restorations.
It takes less time than ever to get that straighter smile you’ve always wanted. Used for 20 minutes a day, the stimulating AcceleDent mouth appliance greatly speeds up orthodontic treatment. And with Accelerated Invisalign, patients see results much sooner than with traditional Invisalign. In general, braces are more comfortable today than ever before. Some hide on the insides of teeth, while clear aligners are removable for easy brushing and flossing.
With the look, feel, and performance of natural teeth, dental implants are considered the standard of care for those who have lost teeth due to accident or disease. Endodontists are saving children’s teeth with amazing regenerative stem cell therapy that will likely be available for adults in the future.
Improving overall health is an important dentistry trend. Screenings and treatments for tooth decay and gum disease, as well as the ability to correct a patient’s misaligned bite, all lead to a better quality of life. While some trends come and go, you’ll find a healthy, attractive smile is always in fashion.
Cosmetic Dentistry Institute
Chosen as the top cosmetic practice in the nation, the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute offers nothing less than excellence in dentistry and the highest commitment to patient care and comfort.
“Who says that tender loving care has no place in a dentist’s office? I think this is the current trend in dentistry,” Dr. Craig Golden says. “Dentistry in America has focused its energies and attention on creating age-defying smiles, while making treatment easier and more comfortable for the patient.”
“Our beautiful new office is nearly 6,000 square feet of the most advanced dental technology that enables us to create healthy, white, perfect smiles,” Dr. Marcy Goldin adds. “In our soothing, spa-like environment, we combine compassion and expertise, so your visit will be comfortable and painless, as well as efficient and high-tech.”
The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute features digital X-rays that offer better quality images and less radiation. DIAGNOdent® detects even tiny, hidden cavities. With the soft-tissue dental laser, excessive gum tissue can be quickly and painlessly sculpted. The I-CAT 3-D Dental CT Scanner is especially useful for implant planning and placement.
“Our advanced CEREC® 3-D system precisely mills custom porcelain crowns and other restorations in just one office visit, eliminating the need for temporary crowns and multiple visits,” Dr. Marcy Goldin says.
“State-of-the-art implants are the new standard of care for replacing everything from a single tooth to a full complement of teeth,” notes Dr. Craig Goldin, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. “The implants look and feel like beautiful, natural teeth — so you can smile, chew, and speak more confidently, and have a better quality of life.”
And with sedation dentistry, you can be totally relaxed during your treatment.
“It’s wonderful for people who might be apprehensive or for those who would like all of their dental procedures completed in as little as one visit,”
Dr. Craig Goldin says. “All of our technology and treatment options — everything we do — is driven by our pledge to go above and beyond for our patients.”

Nick Palmer, D.D.S., M.S.
Orthodontist Dr. Nick Palmer utilizes the latest technologies to make treatment much easier, more comfortable, and often much quicker for his patients.
“The most innovative product this year is the FDA-approved appliance AcceleDent. You place it in your mouth for 20 minutes every day. As it vibrates, it accelerates orthodontic treatment by an average 37 percent,” Dr. Palmer says.
Another new product is TADS (temporary anchorage devices), which are miniature screws that are placed into the bone to assist in tooth movement. The orthodontic implants can, in most cases, provide an alternative to surgery.
“We have clear brackets that are self-ligating, which means patients can go a longer time between office visits. And there are braces that go on the insides of the teeth, called lingual braces, that you can’t see at all,” Dr. Palmer says. “We often use clear aligners to help people who had braces and didn’t wear their retainers. The aligners straighten the teeth, eliminating the need to wear braces again.”

Theodore C. Hadgis, D.D.S.
Keeping up with the latest advances in dentistry is a priority for Dr. Theodore Hadgis, whose specialties include cosmetic dentistry and the treatment of TMJ disorders and sleep apnea.
“Today, people are keeping their teeth longer. Consequently, they may break a tooth, clench their teeth, or their teeth will wear — and it changes their bite,” Dr. Hadgis says. “When the teeth, muscles, and jawbone are not in balance, you can develop TMJ issues such as headaches, neck aches, ear pain, and dizziness.”
Dr. Hadgis utilizes state-of-the-art digital and computerized technology to determine the jaw’s most natural position and to correct the bite, often through the use of a custom-made oral appliance. Advanced technology is also used to create a custom mouthpiece to keep the airway open in patients with mild sleep apnea or for those who can’t wear a CPAP.
“We consider our patients’ overall health,” Dr. Hadgis says. “A beautiful smile should also be healthy and functionally correct.”
Dr. Hadgis is an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic and an LVI Fellow.

North Canton Orthodontics
Invisalign is the most innovative standard treatment for patients who want to straighten their teeth and get a healthier, more beautiful smile, says orthodontist Dr. Nicole Teifer.
“The clear aligners of Invisalign are much more comfortable and safer for patients than traditional braces. They are removable so you can eat or drink what you want during treatment, and you can easily clean and floss your teeth,” she says.
“Adults are more willing to wear the aligners because no one can tell you have them in. An added benefit is that with Invisalign, you can whiten your teeth and straighten them at the same time.”
With Accelerated Invisalign, treatment time is reduced by up to 50 percent, so patients see results much sooner. Teens age 13 and older can maintain their self-esteem and confidence, and have no need to worry about breaking a bracket or losing a rubber band with the durable Invisalign Teen.
“Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign Teen can more easily accommodate a teenager’s active lifestyle. Another great advantage is that if the patient loses a tray of aligners, it’s replaced for free,” Dr. Teifer says. “Invisalign Teen also has compliance indicators, a blue ‘wear dot’ on the back of each aligner that fades over time with use. Teens and their parents can check the aligner to see if it was worn the desired amount of time before moving on to the next tray.”
Thanks to improvements in technology, Dr. Teifer says most people who can be treated with traditional braces can have amazing smiles with Invisalign.

Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel
For Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel and her dental team, it has never been easier to help patients achieve the beautiful smiles and overall health they deserve. Offering contemporary treatments such as the CariFree System, which can actually prevent tooth-decay, and oral DNA testing, which has revolutionized therapies for advanced gum disease, this office is well-known for providing cutting-edge treatment.
“Continuing education and innovation are at the heart of my practice,” Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says. “Dentistry is constantly changing. By utilizing the most advanced technology, such as our low-radiation digital X-ray system, I can precisely detect problem areas in their early stages. This enables me to provide the most conservative treatments for my patients.”
We learn more every day about how our oral health is directly related to systemic health. Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says it’s important to partner with medical physicians, to ensure her patients have an excellent quality of life.
Oral DNA testing not only provides a window into better treatments for gum disease; this screening tool can also test for the presence of HPV (human papilloma virus), which can lead to oral cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 7,850 people will die from oral cancers in 2012. Dr. Salzberg-Siegel says frequent screenings and the awareness that one carries HPV are invaluable tools in the early detection of oral cancer.

Joseph R. Nemeth, D.D.S. & Associates
On the cutting edge in his field, periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth utilizes photodynamic therapy (PDT) to help control gum disease.
“Photodynamic therapy involves placing a photo-sensitive agent or dye into the infected gum pocket. Then we activate a special light that causes oxygen to be released, which kills the disease-causing bacteria,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “It’s a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure, and we’re very excited about it.”
Other innovative tools in Dr. Nemeth’s armamentarium include specific probiotics (“good” bacteria) that, when taken orally, can reduce or eliminate the “bad” bacteria that causes gum disease. For people missing all of their upper or lower teeth, the All-on-4™ implant technique gives them a beautiful new smile in just one visit. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), produced using the patient’s own blood, is another advanced technique.
“The PRF membrane is placed over a surgical area, for example, when we are regenerating gum tissue,” Dr. Nemeth says. “It dramatically speeds healing time and enhances the results.”

Goodis Endodontic Specialists
Dr. George Goodis and his colleague, Dr. Gerald Halk, are utilizing the latest innovation in root canal treatment for children: stem cells.
“There is a high incidence of sports injuries and other accidents that result in dental trauma to children’s teeth. We can’t perform a traditional root canal when there is an injury because the inner part of the child’s tooth, called the pulp, and the root itself, are still developing,” Dr. Goodis explains. “Endodontic researchers have discovered that both children and adults have stem cells located at the ends of the tooth roots. We can stimulate those immature stem cells in children to ‘grow’ new nerve and pulp tissue, allowing the root structure to complete its development.”
While the regenerative endodontics approach is now a mainstream treatment for children, Dr. Goodis says the therapy will one day be available for adults.
“It’s an amazing and exciting development for our patients.”
