PLASTIC AND COSMETIC SURGERY PROFESSIONALS – SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

Acne may be the most common skin condition in the United States, but when your skin erupts, it’s personal. Whether you’re coping with acne, multiple age spots, baggy eyelids, or excessive hair shedding, there are more cosmetic skin treatments available today than ever before — and more effective solutions to meet your specific needs.

For some people, one treatment alone can dramatically turn back the years. Fillers can replace lost volume and sculpt the face, resulting in a more youthful look. An upper eyelid-lift can make you look younger and more rested, and it might also improve your vision.

The minimal-downtime Fraxel laser corrects a number of skin issues in one treatment: it softens wrinkles and lines; improves tone, texture, and pore size; and stimulates collagen production for tighter, more youthful looking skin.

Cosmetic plastic surgeons and other medical professionals we spoke with will often use a combination of treatments to achieve the best results. One physician helped his patient look more youthful for an upcoming event with a series of treatments including Botox, a chemical peel, and Sculptra Aesthetic, a facial volumizer.

Another physician found a facial filler to correct acne scars for a patient who had tried peels and laser treatments without success.

Some of the most compelling stories are those of people who have lost all or most of their hair. Using a combination of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and topical scalp and hair products, they were able to grow their hair back — no more wigs or hats!

    Dr. Myra Danish

A droopy upper eyelid can make you look older, and it also may impair your vision, says facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish, M.D., F.A.C.S.

“I had a patient who was a basketball referee. He complained that his droopy eyelids affected his vision to the point that he wasn’t able to make accurate calls because he couldn’t see some of the plays as well,” she says. “Typically, an examination would show the skin of the eyelid ‘hooding’ over the eyelashes, which can affect the patient’s peripheral vision.”

Performed as an outpatient procedure, an upper eyelid-lift or blepharo- plasty removes excess skin and fat.

“We take out the stiches in a week. You can then start wearing eye makeup and return to work,” Dr. Danish says. “Blepharoplasty solves two problems. One, it improves your function, allowing for better peripheral vision. Two, it helps you to look younger and more rested.”

Patients can be referred for a visual field test, as the upper eyelid-lift may be covered by insurance.

“If the patient also has puffiness and bags under the eyes, they might consider having a lower eyelid-lift along with the upper eyelid surgery,” Dr. Danish says. “We remove the excess skin and fat, giving them a smooth lower eyelid. For both surgeries combined, recovery is about a week. Patients definitely look 10 to 20 years younger.”

    Boyd Cosmetic Surgical Institute

The treatments that address dark spots or sun damage on the skin are often more effective when performed during the time of year when there is less sun exposure, says Dr. Charles Boyd, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon.

“A patient in her 40s had dark spots on her cheeks, around her eyes, and around her upper lip. It’s a very common condition, called melasma, that can be triggered by hormones,” Dr. Boyd explains. “We did a combination of treatments, starting in the fall with a chemical peel, as well as at-home skin care, to prime the patient’s skin for a laser treatment. In January, we used the minimal-downtime Fraxel laser to further enhance and rejuvenate the skin on her face, neck, and chest.”

Dr. Boyd typically recommends a combination of treatments, always tailored to the patient’s individual needs, and taking into account their skin type (lighter or darker skin tones) and their budget.

    FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness

Become a “Perfect 10 in 10 Days” with a trio of innovative treatments from FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness.

Holly CaSaroll, founder of the award-winning beauty and wellness clinic, describes the 10-day transformation of one client: a 55-year-old woman competing in the job market who wanted to look younger without having surgery.

“Using the Pearl ablative laser we resurfaced her facial skin to remove wrinkles, lines, and sun damage. Botox and fillers restored volume to the mid-section of her face. We performed Ultherapy to gently tighten, lift, and sculpt,” CaSaroll explains.

The latest noninvasive, no-downtime alternative to a surgical face-lift, Ultherapy uses powerful, focused ultrasound to treat the dermis and the skin’s deep support structures. This remarkable therapy also stimulates collagen production, providing further rejuvenation over several months.

    Grosse Pointe Dermatology

At Grosse Pointe Dermatology, patients receive individualized treatments to help solve their medical and cosmetic skin problems. One new patient, a 42-year-old woman, had been dealing with chronic severe acne for nearly 20 years.

“She had been on oral antibiotics for a long time and was concerned about developing side effects such as antibiotic resistance and yeast infections,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. David Balle. “The patient also was leery of the possible side effects of taking Accutane, a medicine that can have miraculous results for people whose chronic acne is not under control through conventional methods.”

While birth control medication can help control acne, the woman was not a candidate for this avenue of treatment. Dr. Balle recommended Aldactone, a medication traditionally used to treat high blood pressure.

“Given in a lower dose, Aldactone blocks the effects of hormones on the skin in women who have acne, to prevent breakouts. It worked beautifully for her,” Dr. Balle says. “I also did a light beta hydroxy peel to improve the appearance of her skin.”

A 55-year-old patient wanted to look more youthful and relaxed for her daughter’s wedding, but she was hesitant to have surgery or a laser procedure.

“We gave her two treatments of Sculptra Aesthetic, a facial volumizer that stimulates the growth of new collagen,” Dr. Balle explains. “I did a VI Peel to freshen up the surface of her skin. She also had Botox, to relax her frown and forehead lines and crow’s feet. She was very happy and achieved the look she wanted.”

    Alnajjar Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Samer Alnajjar utilizes the minimal- downtime Fraxel laser to rejuvenate and tighten skin on the face and neck, solving several problems in one procedure.

“A patient in her 50s initially came in with a concern about her ‘turkey neck,’ the excessive skin on her neck and underneath the chin. She also had quite a few marks on her face from chronic acne she had suffered as a young adult. When I told her we could fix both problems at once using the Fraxel laser, she was thrilled,” Dr. Alnajjar says.

“I would resurface the patient’s facial skin, remove the acne scars, and tighten up the skin on the forehead, around the jowls, and on the neck. Her complexion, from her face to her cleavage line, would blend as one texture, color, and consistency. The Fraxel laser turns back the years, leaving healthy, radiant, more youthful skin.”

    Michigan Hair & Skin Center

At Michigan Hair & Skin Center, people of all ages have stopped losing their hair and have experienced regrowth through a program utilizing noninvasive low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and vitamin-rich hair products that cleanse and nourish the scalp.

“We had a 76-year-old client who was balding on top, and he just wanted to keep what he had. When he finished the program he had twice as much hair as when he started,” says owner Carol Wagner. “Another client shaved his head because he was so embarrassed about his hair loss. His head was cold in the winter and he would get sunburned in the summer, so he always wore a hat. Three months into the program, he had enough hair that he didn’t need the hat. He was thrilled to pieces.”

FDA-approved LLLT clears away buildups of DHT (dihydrotestoster- one) that clog hair follicles. The laser therapy also increases blood flow to the scalp so that active hair follicles receive the nutrients needed to re-grow hair.

“We had a woman who lost a good amount of hair during chemo. Through our process, she gained her hair back in two months. Without this process, it would have taken a lot more time,” Wagner says. “Another client had lost hair due to a serious thyroid condition. After having medical treatment and going through our program, she very quickly had her full head of hair back. Most people don’t get all of their hair back because some hair follicles have already died, so that was amazing.”

    Gina Randhawa, M.D.

It’s very gratifying when you help a patient resolve a problem that they’ve been living with for a long time, says internal medicine physician Dr. Gina Randhawa, who recalls a patient whose face was marked with deep acne scars.

“She had many peels and laser treatments, but none of them made any difference. What we did was use a facial filler to fill up the scar pits, which almost completely disappeared. The procedure has to be repeated once a year or so, but the more you do it, the less you need. This gave her a very good result.”

Arnold Gross, D.P.M., PC, Eric Foreman, D.P.M.

In just one 30-minute office procedure, The PinPointe FootLaser can painlessly vaporize unsightly fungus under the nails.

“Toenail fungus is very common and there has never been a good treatment,” says board-certified podiatrist Dr. Arnold Gross. “Until now, your choices have been topical creams and liquids that rarely work, or a pill that has a long list of possible side effects.”

Dr. Gross and his partner, Dr. Eric Foreman, are the first doctors in Michigan to offer the state-of-the-art, FDA-cleared PinPointe laser system. The procedure has no complications, and within three months of treatment, patients start to see new growth of smooth, clear, fungus-free nails.

    The Grande Med Spa

Kellie, a client at the Grande Med Spa, shares her story.

“I owe my new look to the Grande Med Spa. I walked into the beautiful private spa and was greeted with warm smiles by three gorgeous ladies. Everyone was so kind and willing to help me with my sun-damaged and aging skin. The knowledgeable laser technician put me on a skin analysis machine, and decided that laser skin rejuvenation for my brown spots and laser skin tightening to promote collagen and tighten my skin was what I needed. She added Botox to my wrinkled forehead and filler around my mouth area. I look years younger and I am so confident now! There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t get compliments on how great my skin looks. My husband and friends tell me I look beautiful! Thank you, Grande Med Spa. I absolutely love my new skin!”

    Renew Hair & Skin Center

Women and men who’ve suffered the distress of hair loss and hair thinning are now seeing less shedding and significant hair regrowth with Renew Hair & Skin Center’s specially formulated Hair Advancement Serum with stem cell extract derived from plants.

“These plant-based stem cells have the ability to safely regenerate inactive follicle stem cells to promote hair growth,” says Renew co-founder Robin Welford. “Our Hair Advancement Serum also increases the lifespan of the hair follicle. Our clients have had great success.”

While this groundbreaking serum can be used alone, it’s part of an overall program of treatment that includes a proper diet, vitamin supplements, nourishing hair products, and Renew’s FDA-approved low-level laser light therapy (LLLT). A noninvasive, painless and no-downtime treatment, LLLT is capable of thickening existing hair and promoting an increase of new growth.

“The results have been so amazing that we now offer our own FDA- approved at-home version of the laser,” says Renew co-founder Suzie Meklir. “One of our clients, a 32-year-old mother of five, was bald for 14 years from alopecia. She used our at-home laser and the stem cell extract, and she grew a full head of hair. It really was remarkable.”

A 64-year-old client was happy that she no longer wore wigs: “My hair is growing in areas that were bald. Now it’s thicker, fuller and growing like a weed,” she says.

Renew designs, builds, and manufactures its own advanced FDA- approved laser technology. Hair Advancement Serum and the at-home laser are shipped nationwide. Call for a consultation today.
