In the heart of Detroit, where resilience meets renewal, Mariners Inn has stood as a beacon of hope for more than a century. Since its founding in 1925, the organization has helped thousands of men battling addiction and homelessness find stability, healing, and purpose. Now, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary, Mariners Inn is not only honoring its legacy—it’s expanding it.
One of the most powerful symbols of that growth is The Anchor, a newly opened permanent supportive housing facility that provides 44 units of affordable, safe housing. Designed for individuals in recovery, The Anchor offers more than just shelter. Residents benefit from access to wraparound services such as behavioral health care, case management, job readiness training, and community-based support.
“The Anchor reflects Mariners Inn’s evolution,” says David Sampson, CEO of Mariners Inn. “It’s about permanence, progress, and offering long-term solutions that truly break the cycle of addiction and homelessness.”
Mariners Inn’s continuum of care is extensive and deeply personal. The organization offers residential and outpatient substance use treatment, individual and group therapy, family reunification programming, and ongoing alumni support. It also operates a Social Enterprise Program, which helps clients in treatment earn income and reintegrate into the workforce. Participants are hired for landscaping, light demolition, moving, and other jobs—allowing them to build confidence, skills, and stability.
“Recovery isn’t just about getting clean,” says Sampson. “It’s about helping individuals rebuild their lives, reconnect with their families, and contribute to their communities.”
That commitment to whole-person recovery is what makes Mariners Inn a trusted anchor in the city. The organization’s centennial year not only commemorates its legacy but also reaffirms its mission. To date, Mariners Inn has held events and launched new initiatives celebrating 100 years of healing and transformation—each one amplifying the stories of those who have walked through its doors and come out stronger.
Every program and initiative is rooted in community. From recovery coaching to family engagement, the approach is compassionate, trauma-informed, and driven by the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. Mariners Inn also works to combat stigma, provide education, and serve as a hub of hope in Midtown Detroit.
But none of this work happens alone.
Mariners Inn relies on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners to keep its programs running and expanding. Donations directly support treatment, housing, meals, clothing, and job training for men working to turn their lives around.
“Whether you donate, hire one of our clients through the Social Enterprise Program, or simply help spread the word—your support matters,” says Sampson.
As Mariners Inn enters its next century, it invites all of Detroit—and beyond—to be part of its mission. Because when a man finds healing at Mariners Inn, the impact reaches far beyond him. Families are restored. Communities grow stronger. And hope takes root for generations to come.
