Fall is knocking at our doors, and it is time to embrace Northern Michigan’s most colorful time of the year. Knit sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, football games, corn mazes, pumpkin carving… all hallmarks of the beloved season. Here are some that are unique to the Traverse City area that you can’t miss out on this autumn.

    Sleeping Bear Dunes

The Sleeping Bear Dunes are beautiful all year round, but the sandy peaks are especially breathtaking when a patchwork of vibrant fall leaves hugs them. Take an outing on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a seven-mile route that winds through the heart of the National Lakeshore with stops along the way. Experience SBD firsthand with a hike on the Empire Bluffs trail that leads through the forest and out to a vista with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the fall colors. Or enjoy the autumnal dunes with a bike ride on the paved Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail.

    Grand Traverse Lighthouse

A visit to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula makes for a quintessential fall activity. The picturesque drive along M22 never disappoints, especially with the addition of the crimson and golden leaves on the trees. Once you arrive at the restored lighthouse, you’ll be able to walk through the lightkeeper’s dwelling and climb the Lighthouse Tower for stunning sights of the Lake Michigan shoreline. The adjacent Leelanau State Park offers surrounding hiking trails to immerse yourself in the natural area on the coast of the Great Lake.

    Chairlift Rides at Crystal Mountain

Searching for a unique way to experience the leaves changing colors this year? Look no further than the fall chairlift rides at Crystal Mountain. On select dates all season long, you will be able to climb aboard the Buck Quad chairlift and take in a bird’s-eye view of three Northern Michigan counties and the kaleidoscopic blanket of trees covering them. The rides are fun for people of all ages and provide a rare perspective of autumn’s natural beauty, so be sure to book your fall chairlift ride today.

    Village at Grand Traverse Commons

The perfect way to get into the fall spirit is to head over to the Village at the Historic Grand Traverse Commons. With indoor shopping, delicious eats and libations, and a rich history to boot, the Village is a one-of-a-kind experience. A renovation rooted in community; the Grand Traverse Commons has evolved from what used to be a state-run asylum to a bustling business and residential hub. Delve into the history of the Village with one of the eight featured tours of the former Traverse City State Hospital, from an Asylum Twilight tour to a Taste of the Village tour. Take exploration into your own hands and shop in the Mercato, satisfy your palate at the restaurants, winery, and brewery, and wander through the 140 acres of hiking and biking trails on the property.

    Michigan Legacy Art Park

The Michigan Legacy Art Park is a special place where nature meets history meets art, and the union of the three brings everything to life. In the park, there is a collection of over fifty sculptures spanning the 30-acre wooded preserve located in Crystal Mountain. Hike through the Art Park and feel the connection to the people, events, and natural resources that tell the story of the state of Michigan. The outdoor Art Park is open every day, year-round, so discover the park’s magic this fall.
