In September, the summer winds down, and autumn begins to set in. For the lakeside haven of Traverse City, this time of year means that the pace slows down (a little) and the town’s scenery transforms into a spectacular patchwork of fall colors. The calendar is filled with exciting events that celebrate the nature, character, and bounty of northern Michigan. From leaf peeping to craft beer to Pride festivities, unlock Traverse City: Autumn’s Version.

    Plan a Fall Color Tour

Picture yourself in the crisp northern Michigan air, a breeze coming off Lake Michigan, engulfed by the crimson, copper, and gold foliage that fall brings to Traverse City. As seasons change, it’s time to rediscover the once green landscape. There’s no better way to explore the area than embarking on a color tour, with a pumpkin donut in one hand and local cider in the other.

According to Midwest Living and The Pioneer Woman, Traverse City is one of the premier leaf-peeping destinations in the country. People flock from all over the United States to witness a seasonal phenomenon that’s just a drive away. Take a peek at the Fall Color Tour Guide to help shape the journey of your vacation. Along the way, you’ll encounter iconic TC landmarks, stunning coastline, picturesque vineyards, charming port towns, roadside fruit stands, and scenic vistas. The leaves typically peak around mid-October, but the colors start to pop as early as the beginning of September.

    Celebrate Up North Pride Week

Looking for an all-out celebration of the LGBTQ+ community? Up North Pride Week is September 23-27 and is slated to be a week packed full of live performances, immersive activities, inclusive gatherings, and family-friendly events. Highlights include live music, drag shows, Comedy Night, crafts at The Little Fleet, and more.

The belle of the ball is the Visibility Rally & March, the largest pride parade in northern Michigan. Organized by Up North Pride, it all takes place in downtown Traverse City. The visibility march starts at F&M Park, runs through Front Street, and finishes at the Open Space overlooking Grand Traverse Bay, where the festivities will continue with food and drinks! The parade is on September 27 and is free and open to everyone. Celebrate your individuality with an inclusive and proud community.

    C’mon Outside!

Autumn up north brings some of the year’s best weather and backdrops for outdoor events. Calling all runners, walkers, and wine enthusiasts: Secure your bib for the 45 North Vineyard Wine Run 5k on September 21, a unique new race that blends competition with wine country. For those seeking enrichment and adventure, set sail on the Tall Ship Manitou for the “Nibi: Spirit of our Water” experience. On October 3rd  and 4th , the two-hour morning cruise delves into the connection between the Anishinaabe people and the Grand Traverse Bay.

This Halloween, bring the whole family to downtown Traverse City to join the spook-tacular Haunts & Harvest Window Walk. Local businesses compete to design the most eye-catching window displays, and you’ll cast a vote for your favorite festive storefront. Shop, judge, and embrace the spirit of spooky season!

    The Return of Beer Week

Traverse City’s beloved Beer Week is back on November 7-15. Discover TC’s hopping craft brew scene by using the free, digital Beer Week Passport. Earn special deals, discounts, and prizes as you take a self-guided tour of local restaurants and breweries and check in at participating locations. Get ready to respect the craft, connect with friends and family, and celebrate everything else.

Book your fall vacation in Traverse City now so you don’t miss out on the magic.
