The year was 1949. Gas was about $0.27 a gallon, a new home could be purchased for less than $8,000, and on the shores of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms, a priceless community asset – the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association – was established.
This year marks 75 years of The War Memorial being a patriotic, cultural, and community leader and with it comes a time for celebrations! Their diamond anniversary year continues with the marquee gala, An Evening of Red, White & Blue on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. The fundraiser will go to benefit their Historic House Fund which was established to help with restoration work needed at the facility.
“Get ready to celebrate in style at our gala, An Evening of Red, White & Blue, for The War Memorial’s 75th anniversary,” War Memorial President & CEO Maria Miller said. “I’m thrilled about the opportunity to honor our history and achievements. Expect an evening filled with elegance, nostalgia, and heartfelt stories. It’s going to be an unforgettable night that everyone will cherish.”
This year holds special significance as they proudly unveil the restoration of the 1910 historic Alger House, a cherished landmark reflecting their dedication to preserving heritage and history. Founded in 1949 to honor patriotism and enrich the community, The War Memorial is not just a venue – but a patriotic powerhouse, a cultural hub, and a community leader rolled into one. Their impact resonates far beyond the venue’s walls, lakefront beauty, and storied legacy, strengthening the fabric of the community.
Through 75 years of cultural events, educational programs, and patriotic initiatives, they’ve shown as a beacon of education, celebration, and unity, fostering a sense of belonging for all who walk through the doors.
An Evening of Red, White & Blue will commemorate this milestone and pay tribute to the values that have guided them throughout the decades: patriotism, culture, and community. Enjoy live music, entertainment, a live auction, and a gourmet dinner as glasses are raised to 75 years of excellence, and the countless memories yet to come!
This elegant evening includes a wine pull with an assortment of special prizes and an engaging live auction showcasing a selection of enchanting experiences. From trips to Mexico, Manhattan and Mackinac Island, to local experiences on Lake St. Clair, at The War Memorial, or in your own home – there’s an exciting item for everyone.
