Today is a big day for football fans in Detroit. Following the news this morning that the latest season of Hard Knocks will focus on the Lions, the NFL has announced that the 2024 draft will take place in the city.

“The Draft has become a prominent offseason event across the country, and we are excited to work with the Lions and their partners to bring the 2024 NFL Draft to the Motor City,” says Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, in a press release. “With the help of Visit Detroit, the Detroit Sports Commission, and the City of Detroit, the Lions’ passionate fan base and all visitors will be treated to an incredible three-day experience.”

The area around Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza will serve as the site for the 2024 NFL Draft, which is presented by Bud Light. The three-day event will feature the NFL Draft Experience, an interactive football theme park that includes games, interactive exhibits, musical performances, autographic sessions, and photo ops with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

To celebrate the news, the Detroit Lions and Detroit Sports Commission, a subsidiary of the nonprofit tourism organization Visit Detroit, will host an all-ages, football-themed community event on April 14 at Campus Martius. There will be no cost for admission, and more details will be released closer to the event.

“…Hosting the NFL Draft in Detroit promises to be a celebration of our community’s spirit,” says Dave Beachnau, executive director of the Detroit Sports Commission, in a press release. “It will deliver high value for our residents, businesses, and the great fans who make Detroit the best sports city in America. Our partnerships with the Detroit Lions and other valued community organizations helped make this bid a reality. Now, the real work begins with our focus on our collective commitment, contributions, and collaboration.  We are steadfast to host a tremendous event in 2024.”

The NFL Draft is one of the largest annual sporting events. According to a press release, tens of thousands of football fans attend the Draft each year, and millions more watch it on television. The 2022 draft will take place in Las Vegas this April, while the 2023 event is scheduled for next April in Kansas City.
