GreekFest to Feature Authentic Food, Live Entertainment, More

Assumption Cultural Center’s GreekFest returns Aug. 18-21 and will feature live entertainment, shopping, tours, kids’ activities, authentic Greek food, and more. Event organizers expect more than 10,000 people to attend the four-day celebration in St. Clair Shores.

Taking place at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church at 21800 Marter Road, the festival will serve up a wide variety of Hellenic food items. Guests can order kebobs, spinach pie, lamb shanks, stuffed grape leaves, pastitsio, flaming cheese, Greek salad, and Gyros as well as Coney dogs, chicken tenders, hot dogs, and fries. Desserts, prepared by the women of Assumption, include Baklava, custard rolls, Greek breads and cookies, and loukoumades. A drive-thru station for carryout dishes will also be operating, and a Taverna will be open for those 21 and older.

Entertainment includes performances from the Hellenic Society for the Performing Arts, and Greek dancing lessons and daily tours of the church are among the scheduled activities. Meanwhile, for kids, the GreekFest will offer inflatables, a giant slide, games, magic and puppet shows, face painting, stilt walkers, a balloon man, a special appearance from the Detroit Tigers mascot, Paws, and more.

Guests can also peruse an indoor Marketplace with vendors from the U.S. and Greece. They’ll be selling items such as art, home goods, jewelry, oil paintings, and imported women’s clothing. Additionally, a Grand Raffle will be held on Aug. 21 with cash prizes ranging from $200 to $10,000. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each and can be purchased online or at Assumption’s office.

Admission is $2 a person, and there is no cost for children 12 and under. There will be free parking and a shuttle service. A portion of the proceeds from the festival will benefit Ukrainian Children’s IOCC Fund and Cass Community Social Services.

GreekFest will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 18, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 19, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 20, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 21.
